Auto focus trouble with 18-400mm lens

My Tamron 18-400mm lens, which I have used for about a year just started a problem with auto focus. MF still works, but at 400mm the AF will not work unless I start at around 100mm, focus and then zoom out to 400mm, focusing as I zoom out. But, once focused and I turn to a new subject, will not AF, and I have to either must go to MF or zoom back to 100mm and start the process over. Have used 2 different camera bodies and cleaned all contacts. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem or a similar one. Thanks for any comments.

Have had mine for several months now, use it both on a D7200 and D500 fairly often as it is a very versatile lens. No problems yet. Did have some problems tuning a 150-600mm G2. Sent a message to Customer Service at Tamron, which you can find on their website. Exchanged some very helpful emails with a customer service rep. Ended up sending the lens back to Tamron. Had it back in a week. I was very pleased with their warranty work.

If you haven't already, clean both the camera and lens electronic contacts (91% alky on a microfiber cloth would work), just be careful and rub gently. This has made several of my Nikon and aftermarket lens come back like they never left! If that doesn't help, then a repair trip is next route.

Is the lens physically far enough from the subject to auto-focus within the acceptable range at 400mm? Generally speaking a lens can focus at a closer distance for shorter focal lengths, that distance increases as the focal length increases.
