Living the life in Sarasota Fl.
Have always been a simple point and shoot camera person.
Hobbys thru life have been skydiving in my early twentys then scuba diving from mid twentys and still do.
Been collecting H & K full auto's since early 80's when toys were cheap. (Became best investments I ever
made). Since retired I'm a part time NRA instructor.
Looking for advice & help on a nice camera and lens for taking good photos and short videos of students along with
capturing very cool photos of brass flying. One of my students recently let me try his Nikon 7100 along with I think was
a 18 x 140 lens. Wow unbelievable until know I didn't no what a great picture shoot look like. Well know I'm spoiled.
What to do ? Would like to find a good deal on a nice used set up.Any advice on this choice and or leads would be
Greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Ken

Check with KEH, B&H Photo, and Adorama. Just google the names. They all sell used equipment, with KEH specializing in used equipment. B&H and Adorama sell new, refurbished, and used. You may be able to get a limited warranty with all three companies. Before you buy, decide what you want to photograph. If you want to photograph action, you may want to look into a Nikon d500. More money, but you will not need to upgrade down the line. If you are more interested in stills, landscape, and portrait, look into the Nikon d7200, in my opinion it is a little better camera than the d7100. Good luck and have fun with whatever you choose.

From another Ken, I think Nikon has a refurb sale still going. D7200 for $699.00 if I remember correctly. Have fun. (Just checked, it seems the sale is over but refurb is about $850.00).

If you think the Nikon videos were great, suggest looking into a Sony "a" series or a canon M50. It may be the one you are looking for - or not. lol

Ken welcome to the forum. I like B&H as a source for equipment.
Here is a deal on the D7100 outfit. Call them and ask about the warranty as an imported model.

Welcome to the HOG.

What is an "NRA Instructor" please?

Take a look at the Olympus range of OMD camera equipment.
Depending on your budget, the OMD EM1 MarkII is brilliant
and Olympus has superb optics and a Pro range of lenses.

Enjoy your photography and the forum.

Welcome, this is a great place to learn what you need to accomplish your target photography needs. Just remember, different people shoot with different cameras and most like what they have purchased so don't take one persons advice and think that it must be the best! It is a little like asking NRA what is the best gun to shoot a specific type of game. There can be more than one good response but possibly not what you are looking for!

I know I just figure a little advise doesn't hurt. I'm kind of leaning towards the nikon 7100 with a 18x140 lens.
I been posting pics on a gun forum with just phone pictures and always so disappointed compared to some of the
Others I see. So in asking some of the Forum members with unbelievable photos I've been told by a few they use this
Camera set up. But due to cost looks like I probably am going to have to go used if I want to be able able to afford this
The only thing I'm a little worried about is its size. One of the reasons I like this is not only the quality of pictures it seems
That the WiFi will make it easier to download. I wish I could find something in a smaller platform that would be close to
The same quality pictures. Do you have any advise on on what might be one to look at in a smaller size.lm just trying to
Look at all possible good idea before I purchase. I have a great deal of experience about shooting but know NOTHING
about photography.
Thanks for your great response,
Ken in Sunny Sarasots, Fl.

Ken, I have a D7100 and use mostly a 18-105 lens although I have longer and shorter lens. It is a good camera but it is a couple of generations old and would opt for the D7200 or D7500 if one were available in your price range. the D7100 and lens you are looking at is not a bad setup either. I think the D7100 has a wifi after market option but the basic camera does not have it. If that is something important to you may want to look at other models. like you, I know more about guns than cameras but I have learned a lot from the people on UHH but photography is not something you get overnight - keep reading and you pick up new things of interest almost daily. Best of luck on your search!

Its so nice talking to a gun person. I was almost afraid to mention guns due to people's political opinions.
I was lucky enough to have a cop friend talk me into purchasing Fleming Sears for HK platform toys,M16's
And UZI's back in the early 80's when this stuff was cheep, well not for me back then but now completely
Unaffordable. I was told would be a investment. It sure has is I could ever sell something. Well mabe some day
When I can't hold a gun any more, Hopefully a long time from now. I never think twice when spending a lot of $ on
A new sight but camera equipment Ha,just seems like alot.
I don't no where you live but if you ever make to fl. I love sharing my toys. The smiles I get from people playing with
My toys always make it worth it to me.I wish I could pm you some pictures of my stuff
Ken.
