Vivitar 100 depth of field vs sharpness

My son's favorite camera store is in an antique mall in Oviedo Fl, while we were browsing I found a Vivitar 100mm f2.8 macro for $32. The only problems are it is manual focus and I now need to buy a light meter, as my last one died about 30 yrs ago. I shot some pictures so I could compare dof at different f-stops and see how sharp it is. I'm posting some photos that illustrate how dof increases with higher f numbers and how sharpness falls off at either end of the aperture scale. The first photo is at f4 #2 at f8 #3 at f16 #4 at f32 the fifth one is just a picture I took when I first got the lens. I know these are not the best pics for this but after I shot them I thought I should post them anyway.

Jerry, they look pretty good. They are actually pretty good for tests. The diagonal lines, fine lines etc.

Very nice, Jerry G. Good examples of dof using different apertures. I had to laugh when I saw your fifth picture, trying out the lens. I still have the 1st picture I took when my hubby gave me my first DSLR at Christmas. Took a picture of an outdoor wreath with snow on it. The first with my new toy! It's a good picture, used it on cards, and it still makes me happy! Enjoy your new lens! Good job. Imagine doing that for a living with every lens you could get your hands on.

Have fun with your 32 dollar camera and while your at it get out there with those bugs and catch some fish. Did you tie them?

No, I did not tie these, I do tie flys but would not post pictures of them

Manual focus is not a problem, especially for macro work and thoughtful image making, IMHO. These are very good pics for illustrating the len’s performance in practical applications, in my view. The mid-range apertures’ results certainly look quite good for me. I lost out on a bid for a Minolta 100mm macro for film and digital use - seeing these results gives me an incentive to look for one of these Vivitars.

Looks like you got a keeper. I would struggle with the manual focus, though, as my eyes just aren't good enough any more - even with glasses.
