Northern California's Sonoma County probably conjures visions of vineyards and wineries but there is a strong historical and current tradition of beef, dairy, sheep and poultry production here. Farmers Day at the Sonoma County Fair honors these agricultural activities with some fun and entertaining events; stock horse "line sorting". wild cow milking, a pig scrambile, draft horses, sheep sheering, hide racing, and sheep dog trials. County fairs will always be my favorite celebration of a local sense of place. Please try the downloads.

I like the draft horses most.
Great way to spend a day, Phil. I went to pulling contests with my dad when I was just a tot! It is nice to see these acticities where man and animal work together!
Excellent series, Phil! Sheared a sheep or two myself, not the easiest job!

love the farmers fairs of yesteryear. in our area farmers are dwindling and some of the "farm" events have evolved. i miss them.

Thanks for the visit alby, there are still some good fairs around and they are a touchstone for me.

I appreciate the kind words Gregory, thanks!
County fairs are the "real deal." But I have to admit I haven't been to one in decades. I hope they haven't changed.
