I recently posted sample pictures taken with my 12 year old Sigma lens and received some great advice. Even so, I think I may be forced to buy a new wide angle lens to avoid quality disappointment. Two suggestions have been made. The Tamron 18-200 and the Canon 18-135. My question is if I want quality nearly equivalent to my Canon 100-400 L lens, do I need to buy another L lens? I am really not anxious to make another major investment of say more than $500. I am shooting a Canon Rebel SL1 and although I know I could upgrade my camera, so far I don’t really see the need. I’d really appreciate your suggestions. Thanks for your time.

You should look at the Rokinon/Samyang/Lowa lenses.

If you want a quality wide angle lens, you should shop for an Canon EF-S 10–18 IS
or a used EF-S 10-22

If this is for your Alaska landscapes, you don't want an ultra-wide like Chg_Canon's suggestions. Here's why:

In a nutshell, anything distant will look even further away and very small.

I found the Canon EF-S 18-135 mm to be highly versatile and have many landscape photos on UHH shot with that lens. I often do playful pp, but here are some with relatively normal processing

A 17-40 L Canon refurbished on Canon Store site

https://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/ef-17-40-f-4l-usm-refurbished

Or if you really plan on staying with crop sensor bodies

https://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/ef-s-18-135mm-f-3-5-5-6-is-usm-refurbished

Personally, I don't have EFs lenses, except for the 18-135 that came with a 7D MKII refurb cheaper than the body by itself. I like the versatility of using EF lenses on either type of body and, as they say, spend the bucks on good glass... it holds it's value while delivering sharper optics.

Two great WA zooms but only the slower shorter
ranged one has IS. Having both, I use the IS lens
on a Canon SL1 and the faster longer ranged one
on an a6500 ... cuz, IBIS :-)

I also use the 10-22 on m43 becuz not only IBIS
but QUALITY ! The outer 25% goes unused, but
it's still a great 20-44 [FF] field of view.

Either one is a fine choice.

another vote for the 17-40L IF it’s wide enough for you on a crop frame -they can be had regularly in the $350-375 range. An alternative is the 16-35 f4L which will be a bit more expensive. Both are of the quality of the 100-400L which you mentioned, if they’re wide enough for your use.

Since my only other lens is my 100-400, I think I’d be better off getting something that will fill the gap so I don’t have to invest in a third lens. I guess I should have specified that when I posted my question.

Thanks, Linda. The examples you posted are beautiful. The 18 -135 mm would also help fill the gap between my two lenses.

I have to agree with Chg Canon. The Canon EF-S 10-18 that I use on my Canon T6i is a fantastic lens
Purchased from Canon used, (referb) This lens will give you very sharp images, and lots of DOF for any
cropping you'll want to do.

For a Canon APS-C camera the Canon 10-22mm is the gold standard - for about $600. Canon does not make "L" lenses for the APS-C cameras, but this lens has always been regarded as "L-quality". The newer, lighter 10-18mm is also very good at half the price.

Some photos taken with the 10-22mm lens:

I’m not a Canon shooter but I’d recommend you to look at the Tokina 11-20mm f2.8. It is considered one of the best, if not the best, wide angle lenses on the market.
