I used the string for a short period of time and found it very annoying. Still you need to be careful with caps in your pocket especially if they are from the back of the lens. Your pockets contain lint regardless of how clean they are and can find themselves inside the lens or have a new home inside your camera body next time you attach without looking. I know, I had fibers get caught in the mirror box once.

What string? I don't own a camera/lens with a string attached to the cap except for a now useless SD camcorder. Didn't like it. Always flopping around and making noise if it wasn't attached. This reminds me of when I walked all over Las Vegas with that thing slung over my shoulder, accidentally recording, recording all of my steps and sounds around me with the lens cap constantly flopping around in the scene (the ground). Okay, maybe I'm the only one to find that funny.

I never had a need to put the rear cap in my pocket. If I change lenses, the rear cap from the new lens goes on the lens I'm removing before I put the lens in the bag. (There is A lens on the camera at all times.)

I take it off and stick it in my pocket. Or in my bag.
I have a spare in my bag.

Lens caps are cheap. I put them in my pocket mostly, sometimes my camera bag. There are other techniques.

After losing several, one through a crack in the floor boards in a gondola in the Valley Blanche, mine are now attached with a string.

Yea, I bought a spare (in addition to the replacement), when I dropped one on a log dock that was eight inches over four inches of water. Don't you know that sucker bounced and went vertically between the logs. No way retrievable...
I hang on to the caps much better now.

Pocket always. It’s there until I put the camera away for awhile. There’s a spare in my bag for my most used walking around lens.

The damn thing banging around on the end of a string is just too distracting.

Then drop the lens cap into a little plastic bag before placing it into your pocket. A simple solution.

No string. Pocket or camera bag for my lens cap.
I take it off at the beginning of a shoot. Replace it before storing the camera after the shoot or if swapping a lens.

Advantages of a string: Lens cap will not be lost.
Disadvantages of a string: Lens cap or string will be in some of the photos, including the “one great shot” that day.
Lens cap swinging around while walking is annoying.
String and cap can get caught on external objects.
Temptation to replace cap over lens, will result in missing a great shot.

Advantages of Pocket: Lens cap will not be in any photos.
Disadvantages of a Pocket: occasionally lens cap will be lost. Cargo pants can present a problem.. which pocket?
