Assign FN Button

I shoot with Nikon D7100 and D7200. My question is can you assign the FN button to switch between a single focus point and either 9 or 21 focus points? If this is possible please explain how it is done. The back AF buttons are assigned to Back Button Focus so this is not an option.

Thanks,

Don

FN button options should be explained in your user’s manuals.

Go in the Menu, to Custom Setting Menu, to f Controls, to f2 Assign Fn Button and you will see the different functions that can be assigned to the Fn button. This is for the D7200 I imagine it will be the same for the D7100.

The answer is probably not.

The "button" method to do what you want involves pressing the center of the AF Mode switch and using the Sub-Command dial (in front of the shutter button) to cycle through the focus point selection options. Since cycling though settings requires a wheel or dial of some sort, it would not make sense to use the Fn button in combination with a dial to make the selection with the same hand. Better to use the button on the left hand together with the forefinger to do that.

What you are asking is not possible on a D800 or a D810, and I doubt it can be done on a D7200.

On the D810 there is 4 custom setting modes, a-d. In these modes you can set up the camera the way you want. Custom mode a, 9 at points, custom mode b , 15 af points & so on. I do not know if your cameras have this option but you should check. Probably just as easy to do what gene51 says as it would be to switch modes anyway.

It's covered in the D7200 Menu Guide (not the user manual), and Gene51 is right. It's not an option.

I thought that might be the case. I checked the manual but it is written for someone else, not me.
Thanks to all of you that responded.

BTW, in case you might be wondering, I just checked the D7500 menu guide, and it's not available there either. You'll have to get a D500 to be able to assign an AF-area mode to a function button.

Could the U1 or U2 modes be used to get the desired result?

As was shown by a couple UHH members that can not be done. I do feel for you or understand. I have 4 different Pentax DSLRs and the "alternate" functions or setting controls assignable on each for both the Fn and Fx button are totally different. Can be confusing and frustrating. Especially since that then makes me have to remember what is assigned on each camera. And all the same is not possible even for the default functions. Fun.
