In this day and age the best lens for you is the Tamron 18-400. It’s the perfect walking around lens, the most versatile lens ever. But wait, this lens is more than just versatile. It produces really great results in every photographic category. You will love it and it will change your photographic life

I am looking for a walk around FX lens to complement my Nikon 85 1.8, 50 1.4, Nikon 20-35 2.8 lenses. I had a Nikon 28-300 for my Nikon D800 and thought the lens was soft and heavy.
My plans are to purchase a Tamron 150-600 Sport or a Nikon 200-500. I am now looking at a lens to fill in. My thoughts are 70-300 VR FX lens.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

IMHO, the D800 is a great camera that deserves the best glass you can afford. For what it's worth, after much research, I have settled on the Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8; the Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8; and the Nikkor 200-500 f/5.6. All are VR and of exceptional optical quality. Together, they cover the range of 24-500 with no overlap. The only downside(s) are expense and weight. But then again....in most cases you get what you pay for.

I believe this lens is formatted for crop sensor DSLRs. Not full frame. However, it can be used if the OP's camera can switch to DX mode.

I keep the 24-120 f4 on my D850 as a walk around lens. However, I considering adding the Tamron 24-70 as I could give up some focal length for a faster lens.

I have used your referenced lens for a long time and now use it on my D810. I really like the lens and have received several awards in local contests with it. The only negative I have with it is that at times I have missed shots because it wasn't wide enough. However there is no one perfect lens for all occasions.

Yep. A walk-around lens can be a 200-500mm or a 150-600mm, if you are walking around looking for wildlife shots.

My “go to” walk around lens is the Nikkor AFS 24-70mm f/2.8.

I would be interested in how many, if any, of you use a 50mm (preferably f1.4) as you walk around. I love it on my D850. I can crop and enlarge with amazing sharp results. I still like my 24-300 zoom.

I'm not sure if this is going to help or not, but none of my lenses walk around. I have to carry them. Perhaps it's just bad training on my part. The two that I carry with me most is a Nikkor 28~85 and a Nikkor 28~300.

My Nikon 24-120 works best for walking around.

I too had the 28-300 and found the results not meeting my expectations. Tried the 70-300. Very sharp overall but did not do it for my urban, city, and people expeditions. Now I have enough The 24-120 F4 and it works well. Much better overall results for city/urban, people, general landscape/nature. On my d610 most of the time. For value, consider the older nikon 28-105 D. Excellent walk around but no VR.

Not an FX lens. And "versatility" in this case, has some important compromises. Zoom range does not a great lens make. In fact, the opposite is quite true.

I have the 70-300MM F4-5.6 D version and I love it. You might also try the 24-70MM.

Tamron does NOT have a "sports lens" per say' they do have a G2; Sigma has sport, contemporary and Art lenses.
