Canon makes a nice printer. Check out the Pixma Pro 100.

Pro 100 great! Lots of satisfied customers.

After rebate, about $120.00. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/893738-REG/Canon_6228b002_Pixma_Pro_100_Photo_Inkjet.html

Once again, it's one of the best - and cheapest - printers you can buy. Nice rebate.

I've recently been doing research into photo printers. There are essentially only two choices if you want one that will do 13 x 19 inch prints. Canon and Epson. Both are good photo printers and both have strong points and weak points. I have decided to simply use Costo's photo printing service since I cannot afford to replace ink cartridges or unplug clogged print heads after a period of non-use. If you will be printing at least every two weeks, your print heads should not clog. But don't take a two week vacation away from home and not use the printer during that time. Also, they are big. I don't have that much free space on my desk. Canon's printer seems to have a few more fanboys than the Epson and it will go into an automatic head cleaning cycle after two weeks of non use. Each head cleaning cycle uses a bunch of ink. The ink is the real expense over time. In comparison, the one time cost of the printer itself is almost trivial.

Your costs for a 13 x 19 print would be about $1.75 for paper and $1 for ink. That 's a goodly percentage of the Costco cost.

The price depends on where you purchase paper and ink. That, and how often would 13X19 prints be printed. If you do not have a Costco nearby, home printing may be the best option. When I did my calculations on printing costs for a 13X19 the costs were considerably less than Costco but was told that that Costco was the way we were going to go.

The other point to be considered is the control the end user has over the final product as to image placement, etc.

Well, while I don't agree with the cost figures you state (I think BOTH are too low), there still is the "I did this" factor, as well as quite a larger variety of papers, etc available, as well as "Post Processing" options. Costco can't come close, here, and only a small number of custom processors have as many as ten or so surfaces/weights available. And, of course, you can give your MIL prints the same day!

I got the Canon Pro 100 from B&H for, and got a $250 rebate card. Net, the printer cost a bit over $100. I came with some photo paper as well. The printer is big physically, so make sure you have the space. That is the only drawback. The print quality is outstanding, far better than previous printers. I have finally been able to get the print quality to look like the monitors image, or at least very close. I use Finestra Pro Luster paper, which is reasonably prices through Amazon. I have printed about 200 4x6 and a few 8x10s, and the ink cartridges are still about half full. A new set of 8 cartridges will set you back $125 which may seem like a lot, but is "only" $15.63 a cartridge, less than many. I use photoshop. Make sure you open the photo with camera raw with the proper settings on the bottom of the screen, setting it to the paper you have. I use photoshop, and if you check the print settings going to edit/assign profile, you should make sure it is set to the right printer and paper. I calibrated my monitor, but actually found my original monitor color settings produced a better relationship between what was on the screen and what was printed. I let the printer manage the colors by the way. I have used "photoshop manages", but did not find it made any difference.

I have a Pixma Pro 100 and recommend it. There have been times that I haven’t printed with it for months and it’s never clogged. I use only Canon ink, which I buy directly from Canon, and I believe that’s why I haven’t had a problem. Also, Canon always has a free paper with ink purchase bonus.

When there is a rebate on the Canon Pro-10, you can get it for around 350 to 400, including 50 sheets of 13x19 paper. The Pro-10 is the same size as the Pro-100 but uses 10 tanks of pigment inks instead of 8 tanks of dye inks. The big difference between dye inks and pigment inks is the longevity of the pigment-ink prints.

I have been using an Epson Photo 1400. Since I do not print on a daily basis, not even a weekly basis I often have issues with it. Then I use a lot of expensive ink to clean the injectors and several papers not to mention that some of my printing and expensive paper is wasted also. I am giving the printer away.
For the occasional print it is far better and cheaper to print at Costco or a professional lab.

LOVE my cannon pixma pro 100! The heads don’t clog I’ve gone 2 months without printing and the thing works beautifully. My walls are filled with prints. I’ve never been completely satisfied with the mail orders services and I’ve rarely been dissatisfied with what comes out of my cannon. For all the info you’ll ever need and more go to YouTube and watch Jose Rodriguez. Best info I could find on printers.

I discovered that, too, but how many trips do I want to make to have pictures printed? It costs me about $0.06 per mile for gas, plus my time, so I prefer to print at home. The closest printing stores involve a thirty-mile round trip. If I ever have anything really special to print, I might consider a professional printer. The Pro-100 does a very nice job of printing, though.
