Tuolumne Meadows. Either one with Tenaya Lake and Pywiack Dome. But in my opinion, way overprocessed. Do not look real at all.

I do not believe that such postprocessing makes these images eligible for a contest.

I like the first one. I like the spot where the sun shines thru the clouds onto the rock.

I serve as a judge for several photo clubs in my area. The eye of the viewer is drawn to light and bright. Therefore I would choose #1 but I would crop off about 2/3 of the sky. Your eye is drawn to the light on the mountains and the large amount of sky above allows the eye to wander around. The crop would force the eye back to the mountains which are a strong center of interest. In the second photo, the light and bright spot is the boulder in the foreground which is not a strong subject, it is just a rock.

Go with the first shot.

Well explained.

I'm doing one massive reply to everyone.......Thanks everyone for your input on these two photos. Every one of you had comments that I have been digesting. Your comments have been helpful in my decision and your suggestions all have merit.
For image #1 I purposely cropped it the way I did. I think the rule of thirds works best in this one and that is why there is so much sky showing. I tried cropping it other ways but always came back to this one. I felt it was more dramatic this way.
In Photo #2 I goofed up and had a black line on the left edge that I overlooked......also as several of you have mentioned, my horizon line is off, so I fixed that. The rock out in the lake is distracting and now it is cloned out.
My preference is to submit a print of #1 for the contest. I know several of you have mentioned that it is over processed. I can see why you say that and understand where you are coming from. Personally, I hate overcooked HDR images which I would put in the same category.
I don't have any horizontal images of these two photos, sorry.
I'm attaching the revised image of #2 with those three changes.
Thanks so very much for all of your thoughts and comments. I respect each of your opinions very much.

#2. Make the horizontal level (as others have pointed out), and cut it off, below the blue sky area. Both great photos!!

Since you are looking for opinions I will give you my take on it. To me No. 1 looks very good BUT if it was mine I would do a couple of adjustments as per my taste, which is obvious different to those of someone else.
The histogram tells me the image is slightly underexposed. It is also slightly more contrasty than I like it. It has, again for my taste, too much yellow which I would reduce with a simple adjustment.
I did those adjustments with my calibrated monitor and remember, those are exactly the steps I follow with my photography and I do not suggest others to do the same since we are all different and we have different tastes.
It is a great shot and I wish you the best luck.

Do you have either in landscape format?

If not I’d choose 1 and crop just above the lighted clouds over the mountains.

Same here. The lighting tones are more vibrant, plus to me the interest is in the oval of the mountains and lower sky. Try looking at it on a cellphone, landscape view. Scrolling through the photo on my small screen it was the play between the two that got my attention.

#2 seems like two scenes separated by a swath of lake water.

I have my idea which of these two photos I would like to submit into our local city photo contest, but if I am overwhelmingly wrong please let me know.
Which do you prefer?
Thanks in advance.

I prefer the 2nd, if straightened. The first looks too surreal imho.

The first photo has an ominous look. I like the tones in the second photo...makes me what to be there!

I love the mountains and the lake, but the lake photo has a slanted horizon and a flawed left border. Both of these things would probably influence the judges' opinions. My vote is for #1. Brent, I have always admired your "eye" and your fine work. Both certainly exceed mine and many others on UHH. Good luck in the contest. Mercer
