It is good to do for those who know their stuff, but for a newbie, who does not know enough about the craft, it can be confusing. Better that they get an easier to understand book that explains things in terms that it is easier for them to understand.

I couldn't agree more - most manuals supplied with cameras tend to confuse rather than inform as they contain the bare technical details and little about function usability. - I have books for all of my cameras but you can get good and helpful information on the internet, particularly on Utube.

That's why I read, re-read, re-re-read,.....
(Learn <or remember> something new each visit.)

There are hundreds of YouTube vids explaining just about all photographic equipment made. Many people (including me) hate reading manuals, especially thick ones. YouTube dummys it down so even I can understand them.

To me, the manual is there to explain the different functions of the camera. It is up to you to find out how to use these different functions in different ways to produce the end product. Hense the proliferation of how to books and videos.

These are the tools and how they work.
(Just like programming- These are the commands and how they work. It's up to the programmer to to put them in a sequence to perform the desired outcome.)

Compared to 30 years ago I think today's (Nikon) manuals are much better. They provide a 'Getting Started' section to get people up and running. Then they go into detail for all the features in a tutorial format. My guess is that most folks who think manuals are no good are just overwhelmed by the amount of information, or are afraid to open one because of all the naysayers on the internet.

As we see here every day, a large number of people can't read three pages of a thread before voicing their opinions or asking a question that was answered two posts above. Please spoon feed me so I can get through life!

IMHO

Good point. A good “How to” book will describe what you need to do to achieve effects, settings to use, etc. The manual will tell you how to apply those settings to your particular camera.

I never read the manual cover to cover. If I have a question about the operation of the camera, I look it up in the INDEX, it tells me what page to look on to find the info I need. I also take the manual in the bag at all times so it is a ready reference for me if I have a specific question.

I tend to agree as long as the book shows where and how to find what on the camera and they don't use a film camera book to learn digital or a digital book to learn film.

I have always recommended to read the instructions manual before using the camera to get familiar with all the functions the camera is able to perform.
I would not recommend anyone to read the instruction on a cliff.
