The pattern is predictable: mornings start off clear and still, and over the course of the day clouds build over the higher elevations. By mid or late afternoon, winds rise and thunderheads form and fan out over the lower lands, and isolated thundershowers occur. We're hoping the trend continues, that what we're encountering is actual monsoon activity rather than just one-off summer storms. Its been so dry and so hot for so long.
Its also prime time to test and assess the characteristics of a new lens.
Views to the south, the east and the north from yesterday afternoon, from various places in Poverty Flats, south of town...
Good stuff, Cany. I hope you get plenty of female rain.
I like the last two. Nice pics! I like to see a storm brewing especially in the desert.

Thanks, Chief. Not likely this time of year, but who knows? 'Female' rain --soft, gentle, unhurried rain-- typically occurs in spring. What I've seen several times since late last week is 'male' rain: short bursts of heavy, violent downpours usually accompanied by heavy wind. When it happens at all, the heaviest deluges come in September. That's when roads are reduced to broken patches of small canyons, and mudflows keep DOT crews busy.

Beautiful pics!
Same here in mile high Prescott up North. Hopefully there will be enough rain to lift the fire restrictions in the National Forests.

We're probably headed there today (now in Santa Fe). Hope we can still camp.
That is the pattern here in northeast NM too. The clouds are impressive in the black and white.

Really? Excellent! Odds are, you'll have ample opportunity to shoot some great stuff under equally great skies. Camping shouldn't be a problem outside the parks (where campsites are usually reserved well in advance, but you never know when you can get lucky). Driving out along the River Road (Hwy 128), alongside the Colorado River, to and from Castle Valley two days ago, there are four good campgrounds, and each of those seemed to be practically empty. You might be tempted to find a place that's open, and with a view, but be careful: the winds can make such places a nightmare. Literally.

Very nice images. Out of curiosity....what new lens were you testing? Whatever it is....It seems to be a keeper!

AF-S Nikkor 12-200mm ED VR (DX). Already had this range covered adequately, so it was a little strange for me to pick up this particular lens. The goal was to reduce the need to change lenses as often. It gets REALLY dusty/sandy around here, and I hike a lot in relatively rough country (when it isn't over a hunnerd stinkin' degrees). Only had the lens a week, but I find it quite acceptable.

Thanks Cany. Yes, we've camped all over the place there. One time I was happily sitting on a camp chair reading and sipping on a glass of wine. One of those sudden wind blasts scooped out my entire cup of wine and dumped it down the back of my head.
Thanks so much for your reply.
