Exhibition Photo Cards

I will be exhibiting my works at an event in August. I will have images printed 24 x 30 on Presentation Paper, and want to have a small card next to each image.
What information have others included? Title, location, date taken. Camera and lens used?

What do you all recommend?

Title, location, date.
Sort of like an editorial caption.

rgrenaderphoto, first, well done. What an exciting bit of upcoming activity. Personally, I'd suggest just the Title, Location, and Date Taken. If you put too much information on the card, you will eliminate a good deal of interaction with the people viewing the work, which you might want to minimize. In which case, write as much as you care to.

My experience is that people will generally look at the card and instantly forget what they read. Best to you and enjoy the time spent exhibiting your work.

Can you show us some of what you'll be exhibiting? I always like it when people get out there and try to sell their work (even though I myself found it too stressful to be worth it).

I followed the leads of two photographers who'd done it a lot and coached me. I put small cards with the title, location, camera and lens (no date) just to the side of each framed image. Only other photographers were interested in the camera stuff of course. The cards were printed in off white text on one sheet of black gatorboard and cut with a razor blade knife, cheap solution but they look very nice.

I keep other items at the exhibit depending on where it is, for how long, and who the audience is likely to be (could be business cards, a stack of postcard size reproductions of one of the images with a few sentences about the exhibit, a guest register, a small poster with a bio, a large introductory poster with the title of the exhibit, a price list- what else I put out is very exhibit-specific)

Congratulations and enjoy your moment!

1. Congratulations on the exhibit. Part of the Karma from your positive posts here, is returning.
2. I think the card should include your name and perhaps phone.

Yes to both points. Wishing you the best on this. Your images are always superb, as is your advice to others.

I type up my information on the shot and mount it on core board and use the sticky putty to mount it next to the photo. I list what the shot is, title, location, information concerning the shot, and camera and lens data. I will also include a little story, if their is one, about how I came about the shot on information about the subject. Example follows:

HAUTE COUTURE 16x24
In the spring at Wakodahatchee Wetlands the birds begin to change into their mating colors. The Great Egret grows a unique feathered skirt and its eye ring turns to a bright green. The male and female Great Egrets have very similar mating colors. This female sadly lost its mate after the nest was nearly complete. Each morning I would find her on the nest waiting patiently for her mate to return. As spring progressed trees filled in with foliage and it became harder and harder to view her. This image was taken about a week before I came north for summer. It was getting very hard to see her, I shot with a very long lens through thick foliage as the sun came up over the trees and lit her up. On my last day at Wakodahatchee I noticed a male had caught her attention. I am happily assuming they hooked up.
Nikon D500, Nikon 200-500 f5.6 lens, 1/1800 sec. f6.3, continuous auto focus,750mm, group auto focus, aperture priority, center weighted metering, -2/3 exposure compensation.
Framed 16X24 $300.00 Unframed 16X24 mounted $100.00

in addition, a hard skin. You will have that proverbial one who will crow about how he could do better. You'll recognize them rather quickly. Best way to handle him is to smile, say something like "Glad to hear it" or "That's nice", then go to those who exhibit real interest.

As for the information, presuming its to the general public, your name, Title, brief commentary (could include location and/or date), Pricing. The technical information as to camera, etc., I would leave out.

A good question to pose to the person interested, "What do you see in this that interests you?" or "What do you like about it?" It is like any other sales, the potential customer needs to "take ownership". As to those who just say "I'll buy this one", remember to say "Thank you".

Many forget the follow-through. You are selling yourself through your works. Be the proprietor.

I leave off all technical details except the printing process used. I do include my name...

There are still some questions that need answering. Is this JUST for photography? If not, you'll need to state the medium. Are the pieces for sale? If so, list the price. People want to know if the piece will fit in their space, so posting the size is helpful. Does the exhibit space handle sales, or do you? If you do, then include your phone number.

My art league uses info cards printed on business card-sized heavy paper. The information to be filled out is: Artist's name; Phone: Title of artwork; Medium; Size; and Price. When I do my own private shows, I normally put the title of the artwork first, then the collection it's from (if it is part of a body of work), size and price. I like to include the collection so that if people want a grouping, they know there are more pieces that go with this one.

What I did when I exhibited various sized framed pictures at the local library was to put a number sticker in the lower left hand corner of the frame (or on the glass) and had a loose-leave note book on the table with title of shot, my name and phone number and price. I had a nineteen piece exhibit and sold four pictures including the largest and most expensive. In two cases, the buyer wanted their selection in a larger size in one case and on canvas in another. So I accommodated them at an increase in price. Everyone was happy, including me.

Title, location and date taken are pretty standard. Some people are also interested in technical, ie. aperture, shutter speed, lens, etc. It really dpends on how large your card is. If font is too small to comfortable read with your information, then you either have too much or need a larger card.
