Somehow in ejecting an external drive I lost the connection between the LR catalog and a number of photos. The result is the dreaded exclamation point telling me that the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it? I have had this problem before and was always able to rectify it. However, this time, when I go to locate the original file, (I know exactly where it is.) I get the following pop up box. I can't select the original file. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I still don't know how I lost the connection between the file and LR catalog. I am very careful about only making changes to files from within LR itself. Thanks

Is the file on the external drive that you ejected? If so, reconnect the external drive and the catalog should reconnect with the files. It almost sounds like the particular file is located on the external drive you disconnected and another drive at the same time. Also, check to see if the catalog was/is on that external drive that you've disconnected. LR may be opening a different catalog now.

I would just remove the file from the database and reimport it. Did you try that?

There is a possibility that you have duplicate files in your system. As someone else suggested, simply unlink the folder where the problem is at and then re-import that folder.

As you likely know, LR does not ‘store’ the actual image file. It simply stores the location of the file. In this case, the file was almost surely stored on the external drive you ejected and LR no longer has access to it.
