Smartphone cameras easily best the output from most FF 35mm film point-and-shoot cameras of the era (1960s — 1990s), especially when compared to 400 speed films.

Besides, just try to post a 35mm film image to the Internet a minute after you make it...

In fact, cell phone sensors range from an average of 5mm to a maximum of 10mm compared to the 35 mm film size. I don't care how many pixels you have a Rollei 35 film camera beats any current cell phone with regard to image quality.

Do you have evidence of this. Physics alone tells me this is impossible. No matter how good the image from the cell phone is, it would have to be enlarged many more times than the full frame film image. I do, however agree with your second statement. But my comment dealt strictly with image quality.

It is not the size of the sensor that determines whether or not digital surpasses film. It's the megapixels. Nokia made a cellphone that had 42 megapixels and worked very well. They forgot that they needed to have a good phone and system to go with the camera.

You've got that right! But then Rollei 35 film camera beats any current DSLR too!

I can do that with my Hasselblad.

I have an older Samsung Avant. Calling photos from this phone equal or lesser to an "instamatic" would be a compliment of the highest order when compared to other phones, the instamatic or a DSLR of any age or technology.
Granted phone technology seems to be faster than DSLR manufacturers who seem to choose being just good enough until the next model is released. The exception(s) may be Sony and Fuji.
Do I use mine for photos? Yes. I use it when shopping to take shots of labels of products I want to research. I am done with using it for photos of people and places. They are still crap as far as I am concerned for any other type of photography. Just my opinion.

I disagree on your comment about smartphones advancing over DSLR's or that the big manufacturers make them only "just good enough". If you do some research into the current top end crop of cameras, you'll actually find that innovation can make its way into a camera before the function is really ready for prime time. Take eye detect in some cameras. It's hit and miss. There is advancement in both formats yes, and I would suggest that each format could learn from one another. My last point, calling a smartphone "crap" is just snobbish. The attached photo is uncropped, and straight from the camera. What about it is "crap". I would not have the photo if I'd relied on my DSLR. Simple as.

Yes, your Canon 1Dx is a pro camera. Nobody disputes that. But most of us have mastered the pro modes of our cellphones so that we can even get pro quality images from the limits of our cellphones. If you don't believe that to be true, feel free to write the National Geographic photo editor and tell her she can't produce pro quality images from her cellphone even though she does. Yes, she will use a pro camera of her choice off the Nat Geo shelves. But she also knows how to shoot unobtrusively with her cellphone and get pro quality images. Maybe you should learn what your cellphone is actually capable of like the Nat Geo photo editor has.

My cell phone is no good for taking photos. I’m sure I just need a better phone to make me a better photographer!!!
Right now I only have an iPhone X, but it’s great for TexTing!!! I’m fact, I’m typing this on it as we speak!! What do you suggest I move up to so I can shoot like the editor of NatGeo??? Will I have to wear a skirt too?!?!

Alfred U: First I have time to get back to you. What I was said about a cell phone is using a cell phone when one has no film in the camera, batteries go dead. and other reason your camera is not working. No way I am saying that cell phone is better than a film camera. I own a Hasselbled at one time. It was Model 1000 F, sold it.

That depends on the film camera. A Hasselblad is better than a cell phone camera, if you have the skill to get the best out of it. But the best cell phone cameras are better than an Instamatic.

My grandmother from Glasgow always loved the look of a man in a kilt. We Americans don't know what they're missing. And I've heard that a real Scot always goes commando.
