Monarch...

Those are really nice images. I have a dumb question: How can one tell the difference between a male and a female?
Thanks Kathy.... that's why I love my sx50 for going the distance!!!
It's very easy telling the sex, the males have two black ovals (scent glands) on the lower portion of their wings, which you can see clearly when the wings are open, but in certain light you can tell from the underside. This one was most definitely a female, so I hope she comes back and makes an egg delivery!

Thank you kindly, Geoff, for your visit and comment!! That little SX50 does a heck of a job when you need to get close, but you can't!

Good shots Angela. I hope I see some but so far nothing....Rich
Rich, after looking over last years shots... this is a little early to be seeing her and for finding the cats.... the first monarch most have come very early June, since her 5 cats are close to becoming monarchs. So I think you have time and I'm sure they will come.... I was taking care of cats well into September last year.
Angela, very nice shots - focused and brilliant.

Thank you so much, BF, for your visit and very kind words!!! I lucked out that she landed.... I really just wanted to capture her since I am documenting my Monarch experience this year.... last year I raised and released 23!! So far this year I have 5 cats and 2 are already in chrysalis!!
Beautiful!
Thanks for sharing Angela.
Nice shots as always Angela.
We have a butterfly bush but haven't had much action so far this year.

Thanks so much, Rich!! To be perfectly honest, this is the only butterfly I've seen with the exception of a few cabbage whites and skippers.... but this female Monarch is what I was hoping would come back to me and leave her eggs on the milkweed!!
Enjoy the day!

Wonderful images Angela. I really enjoyed #3 because the close up shows the intricate design of her wings. Bev
