My Canon Pro 100 has been working flawlessly for a couple of years and now today, all of a sudden I get a message that the printer is not responding. I have been using it wirelessly and so I tried using it with a printer cable but I get the same message. Can anybody tell me what to try?

On the assumption you have a PC running Win 10. With Win 10 a shut down does not close out everything and flush all the temps etc, but a "restart" does. That may clear it up so:
1. do a "restart" of your computer, if that doesn't do it
2. run the trouble shooter app in windows
3. If that doesn't do it then uninstall and re-install all the printer software Canon support has instructions for doing that and updating it if it isn't the latest version.
4. Run all the anti-virus, anti-malware etc that you have and do a clean out and dump all old system files: a. go to All Programs > Windows Administrative Tools > Disk Cleanup > check all boxes that have any junk files then in the lower left of the little window click on "Clean up system files" and follow the directions - warning it may take a while if you have never done it before - even if it doesn't solve your printing problems it should recover a lot of disk space.
5. download something like the free trial of "System Mechanic" (I use the paid 'pro' version.) and run it then follow the instructions to clean and optimize things, I do this 2-3 times a month.

Someone on the Jose Rodriguez photo printer forum just had this issue. Downloading and installing the latest software from Canon, even if it’s what you have now, fixed it for him. Somehow the driver got corrupted.

Often, printer drivers get corrupted, or operating system updates break things in older drivers. It doesn't hurt to load the very latest drivers after deleting the old one.

If what Robert Jerl told you doesn't make your computer run better, AND fix your printer, seek professional assistance. That's a bit of a shotgun approach, but worth doing every now and then.

If any Mac users are reading this, note that printer drivers are supplied to Apple by the manufacturers, so to update, you have to DELETE the current printer (from System Preferences —> Printers and Scanners) and reinstall it, choosing the correct driver when you do. Epson, for one, has an app that will remind you to do this each time there's a new driver waiting to be installed.

Since you already tried using a cable, I'd rule out changes in your WiFi setup breaking communication with the printer. But for others' sake, if you RESET your router to factory specifications and install new firmware, then setup your network again, OR, if you just change the name of the network or the password, you will have to reset the printer's WiFi connection.
