I tried it... missed a few first shots other people picking up my camera got crap... old dogs new tricks. I have both of them set, but will probably stick with the shutter button.

Hmmm... I think I would reconsider. It seems that if other people pick up your camera and get crap then the back button focus is an added "security" feature...no surprising photos of oneself in precarious poses.

I've used bbf for years now and I love it. I will NEVER go back to the press half way down (because I'm ham-handed and would take out of focus photos!!!!). It's not that difficult to master. I, too, am retired.

Welcome to the hype of bbf. There are very few situations where bbf makes sense. Mostly as you have discovered it is a nuisance.

I used to think that same thing and would have agreed with you, but once I got used to it, now it makes perfect sense and it is sooooo much easier to stay focused. By holding down the button, I don't lose my focus point or settings like I did when I was using shutter release because after you've taken the picture, you may lose the focus and have to start all over again.

To Everyone:
Thank-you for posting all of your wonderful comments, web tutorials, and instructional advice.
Also thank-you for your comments about the 3 pictures I have included.
Now onward to practice, shoot, practice, shoot, practice and shoot.

Here is a dragonfly captured with BBF.

Kinda crappy focus, Here's a butterfly captured without BBF

you know, that was one of the reasons for doing it in the first place, that and keeping focus... just not sure my focus was as sharp with bbf... lol. It's always an option :)
