Looking at the stunning images posted on here and watching documentaries you realise what a unique (in our solar system) planet we live on. Why then are there a minority of the human race hell bent on destroying it?

Because the d**mn fools are hungry for power, wealth and more power. Regular folks are insignificant and exist only to inflate their ego or be ready to die for the cause they declare sacred. You'll notice that these leaders, or their offspring, don't do the fighting and dying. That's left to the lower socio-economic groups who go cheering off to war.
Interesting question
I sometimes believe the animals in the bush are more civilized than we are.
Man will destroy themselves..just look around. It is only a matter of time.

One of the most amusing aspects of this whole destruction debate is this: The concept of terraforming has long been a staple of both science fiction and serious hard science. It is the name assigned to a number of approaches to taking an inhospitable planet and turning it into someplace where humans could live and work (if I may co-opt a term used in painting)
en plein air.
It is incredibly funny that our first terraforming attempts are directed at taking the only habitable planet we may ever reach and converting it into a place where we can't survive.
Talk about a cosmic joke!
Or, as George Carlin pointed out in his "save the planet" routine, "It's not the planet that's in trouble. The planet is fine. It's the people who are (screwed)."

We are just another species . Not guaranteed to last for infinity. Individually, we aren't here for long anyway.

LOL you can't destroy mother nature... you can only tease her to the point that she smites you.... then within a few decades her will will again prevail and things will again be as she intends them to be.

I think the answer to that comes from biology. Any organism attempts to proliferate itself as much as it can. It feels no responsibility to the ecosystem in which it lives. If other species do not proved balance the dominant species will succeed so well it kills everything, like the parasite that kills its host. The collective behavior go humans shows that we are no exception to natural law.

O, I see how this is moving, so I'll say it first;
There is a God who's in control.
Man will try and destroy each other and this planet, but it will never happen.
God created and sustains all things, and will intervene at His time.
Sleep peacefully my friends.

It's simple. We let our egos run our lives instead or our intellect.

What we do is not what I would call terraforming. It's something quite the opposite.
George Carlin always made a LOT of sense poking the stupid people. I didn't care what cuss words he used, it's his ideas and the way he expressed them I liked.
R.I.P. Mr Carlin.
I like Gallagher, too.

To which God said: just give me a minute.

Man will destroy man , and the planet as we know it. The planet will survive in some form, man won't.
