that really gets to my soul. It was a grey, cloudy day, but with a little help from LR, I wrung some colour from it.

I really enjoy the soft pastel tones of this series. I also like the lone gull in the second shot. These feel like solitude, contentment, peace - all the good stuff!

I can imagine sitting on a blanket, all alone, and looking at the water for many hours. With a good book and a nice sandwich.

When I am at the shore, I find myself drawn toward these kind of images, too. Maybe just the memory of the negative ions produced by the waves is enough to soothe the soul. One point, Kathy. I was told some time back that I should make a decision about what is more important: the sky or the land. The point being "most folks" don't like to see an image like this split down the middle by the horizon line. I tend to agree, but that's just me.

I find it personally a challenge to take beach shots where there is next to nothing in the foreground. Walking the beach is refreshing; capturing that same emotion with a DSLR is, again, a challenge. I prefer a little something for reference or a beam of light coming out of the clouds? The surf and wave action can be awesome, the challenge is how to zone in on one particular wave section when there is so much going on. Your images have mood/emotion and that's the challenge for me. And trying not to slice the image in half with the horizon dead center, yet at times you just cannot compose the shot any other way...deal with it in post after.

Wow - these are just beautiful! Any one of them would make for a great large print.

And you would have been surrounded by marine iguana! But, yes, that would be good. I can stare at the ocean for hours. Every wave is different - and mesmerizing.

I'm always aware when I shoot these that I tend to put the horizon in the center. I know that's supposedly a no-no, but I give equal value to land and sky. When I move the horizon either up or down, I'm leaving out something that seems important.

I like big, empty beaches. There's something so soothing about them. No obstacles. No people. I'm glad you got the emotion I was feeling. That's success for me in making a photo. I personally like centered horizons. (I'm a bit of a rebel.) The two parts have equal importance to me in this case, because it was part of the colour progression.

Thanks. I'm actually thinking of a large metal print perhaps.

I've had some luck in shooting graphic designs with backlight where the waves taper out on the sand.

It's that tapering that's hard to do, isn't it?
