I own a Nikon 7200 and a Nikon 3300 (the back up). Am giving the 3300 to grandson. I found that after a period of time I need to refresh my memory on some of the functions of the 3300. No big deal but. The 7200 is the perfect camera for me and does everything I need for my photography. I am considering another 7200. My question is, does anyone else use the same make/model of camera for their back up? I can think of many advantages and no disadvantages. Thanks for the input.

I'm in the same-body school. There's no difference in images so it doesn't matter which body I pick up and both get used in equal amounts, rather than one on the shelf and forgotten.

When I go out shooting I take my DX and my FX bodies and lenses. The answer to your question boils down to personal preference. Back up is always important to me in creating images.

My back up is the D7100. Not as much brain freeze that way.

I use 2 different bodies but I do that for a reason. One is my crop APS-C sensor body that shoots 10fps that I almost always use for birding or wildlife. The other is my full frame that I use for just about everything else. I take both sometimes with different lens on them. For astrophotography I take both and use a 16-35 on both at the same time. Thinking of getting a 10-22 or 11-16mm lens for the crop body for night skies.

Only problem I see is money. I have always used the camera that I upgraded as a back up. - Dave

When I was considering a new camera after four years with my Canon T3i, I realized I loved it so much, there was no reason to change. So I bought a second body as back-up (they were no longer being made, so I did need to make the decision fairly quickly) and was very glad to have the twins. I kept a different lens on each.

However, only a year after that I decided to go mirrorless and ended up with two different cameras (it's a long story). Even after several months, I was still turning the knobs for aperture or shutter speed the "wrong" way - because the two cameras are opposite in direction!

In the film days I always had 2 of the same bodies, one chrome and one black.

When I got into digital I started with a D1x, followed by a D2Xs. I couldn't afford 2 at those prices so the D1x became the backup. I followed that with a pair of D300's. I just gave the last one away this month.

What I decided going forward from there is that 2 of the same no longer made sense for me. Unlike film cameras where over 10-15 years there wasn't a big difference in performance, digital cameras do provide better performance every few years. Plus it can be advantageous to have a crop sensor and a full frame body. So right now it is one copy of any camera I buy. Who knows though, the D850 might change that.

I think that the answer to that is going to vary depending on the individual preferences and the need for a backup. If that’s what you want and can afford it then by all means get it.

My question to you would be: (1) Why do you need a backup camera? (2) If GAS is the issue, why not think about a D500 for a new main and the D7200 as backup?

Two of same model with different lenses is a speedy way to shoot without screwing up or wasting time while changing settings in a fast-changing opportunity for a great shot. My experience using 2 different models is often disappointing. YMMV

We shoot weddings, a situation that screams for a backup, and we take a minimum of three full frame Canons to each wedding. They act as a backup system, but that isn't the primary reason we take the three bodies. We take three different bodies because each excels in a different situation - low light or high resolution or somewhere in between these two.

I'm thinking this topic is directed mostly at pros? Wouldn't most amateur enthusiasts rather spring for more/better glass than a backup body?

Unless you have access to Bill Gates' wallet of course.....
