Good Morning All
Thanks to all for the helpful replies that I received this week. I am reaching out once more. Ok here's you assignment. 8000.00 budget you must purchase the best gear for sport shooting. Hockey and Baseball respectively. Camera body i currently have is a Canon 7dmkii. Looking for another body btw is full frame absolutely necessary? Have fun with this assignment. Thanks in advance.📷

Sony A9 and Sony 100-400. Use the in camera 1.1-2X Clear Image Zoom to take you to 800mm f5.6.

Investigate a Sony mirrorless. $3,000, I think, but small, light, good in low light and with a silent shutter. A 70-400 will be another $2,200. Play with that for a while and determine how you want to spend the other $2,000. I invested i Canon. It is a good system but I've grown envious of mirrorless users.

Thanks Bob - I'll see you there. And it won't cost 8K. Even if we drink nothing but the best bourbon and scotch.

I like the idea of squeezing the new Sigma 50-100 f1.8 ( in E-mount) in also if it fits the 8K cap ......goes to 200 1.8 with the CIZ.

I would take higher ISO capability over very fast glass for a lot of sports shooting depending upon the distance to subject and the aperture you intend to shoot at normally. DOF can be very thin with longer focal lengths, wide apertures and relatively short distances to the subject(s).

Best,
Todd Ferguson

The wide aperture is very important for the AF system not just for shooting at ......

True aperture is a factor in the focus system along with many other factors of the focus system. But if you can't get the DOF at the shutter speed that you desire then does the focus become more or less of a factor. Focus tracking with rapidly moving subjects is also a very important factor too. But you find people that can believe that they will get better indoor sports shots with a f/1.4 lens and they end up with a very shallow DOF. And the DOF will also be impacted by the choice of body, FF or Crop. I would recommend anyone interested in sports photography take a look at Mark Rebilas Photography on FB or his website. He gets some amazing shots, but certainly has a lot of top notch gear too... Jeff Cable's Blog also gets into some of his sports shooting among other subjects....

True aperture is a factor in the focus system alon... (show quote)

The camera does its focusing with the lens wide open, and the faster the lens, the more accurate and fast the autofocus is. So even if you stop the lens down some to get more DOF, the focusing is better with faster lenses.

True... But it also depends on the other features of the focus system as far as acquiring and tracking focus. Your statement is generally true but not always true. The Canon 85mm f/1.8 will focus much faster than the f/1.2 85mm lens. So, there are in some cases other factors such as the focusing mechanism and the amount of mass to be moved and the distance it must be moved. Some bodies drive the focus system and others are driven in lens by one of several methods. Some bodies also have a processor dedicated to the autofocus system too.

ALL things being equal, a current technology lens with a wider f-stop will focus as fast or faster and with more accuracy and at lower light levels than a more narrow aperture (current technology lens) with whatever ( current technology) body you want to put it on....and you can shoot at whatever f-stop you want for whatever DOF you want......

But as I said all things are not in fact equal...

Better glass would make a better image on the sensor. A lot of computer and electronics to make that 800 zoom. I know NASA uses it a lot but are we getting NASA quality in our camera bodies that have electronic zoom capabilities. Especially since our computer in our camera, and the programming is not as great as the ones NASA uses,. Those programs are usually listed as top-secret.

It is a real Zeiss lens not optical zoom. It has optical zoom but I never tried it.
It is a big Zeiss lens. The RX10 I and II were very popular for video etc. They had 24 to 200 lens and constant aperture with
built in ND filter. The III lost the ND filter and constant aperture. But the lens is astounding good at most ranges online many zooms.
The newest model of the camera has improved the AF and is even better.

You can do anything with this camera. I sat in a stage presentation my son was one of the guests onstage in the audience hand held
and shot different zooms to create a video of the whole show. Never got out of my seat. I shoot soccer games with this camera
and it works great. You need longer reach and I never worry about a shot across the field. I have a good 70 200 cannot do what this
bridge camera can do.
