Good Morning All
Thanks to all for the helpful replies that I received this week. I am reaching out once more. Ok here's you assignment. 8000.00 budget you must purchase the best gear for sport shooting. Hockey and Baseball respectively. Camera body i currently have is a Canon 7dmkii. Looking for another body btw is full frame absolutely necessary? Have fun with this assignment. Thanks in advance.📷

What lenses do you have now? I take it the $8,000 is new spending.

1DX, used 300 f 2.8 vi, 70-200 f 2.8 IS ii. Should have some change left.

That is a good combo!
1Dx, used = $2500
70-200 ll used = $1400
The 300 is not that much longer than the 200 but is hand hold-able for fast sports.
I would look at the 400 ll 2.8 but you need a mono. $4100+ used.
You'll be ready for the Super Bowl!!! Good Luck

Sorry Bill but don't mean to upset the happy wife syndrome. For 3500 that Sigma gets great reviews for 1/2 the price of the Canon counterpart. Found a used 1dx considering that for another body since it's high burst rate works well for sports

Pay $8000 for a camera. Someone has more money than brains.

First, he said gear which could be a combination of lenses and a camera.and could top $8000 easily. A full frame body, a 24-70 mm f/2.8, 70-200 mm f/2.8 and a 35mm prime would do it. If you consider someone spending $8000 as having more money than brains, what budget, and what camera and lenses would you suggest for an upper limit?

Nice kit! Maybe add a tripod and gimbal? It would be worth a trip to Billings and a trip down 212 to try it all out!

I can't even find a Canon counterpart at any price. There is no ?? to 300 mm f2.8 zoom in Canon's lineup. Maybe you are talking about the 300 f2.8 prime for 6099??

Just be a bit careful with used 1DX bodies... I’ve seen some sights at some of the larger events that made me cringe (e.g. bodies dropped open and face down in mud, bodies trodden on by soccer players, as they crash into the sideline photo areas, etc.). Canon Refurbished or a reputable Dealer should be fine, beware of everything else.

As another option, if you get one of those fast lenses, why not get another 7D Mk ii body? With two bodies and your favorite two lenses loaded and ready for the likeliest action, you are good to go! 😉

Canon 1DX Mk2, 5,500, Canon 70-200 F2.8 III, about 2,000. That will do the sports you mentioned and you'll have 500 left.

An alternative that will work would be the 5D Mk 4 with a 24-70 f2.8 and a 70-200 f2.8 all for about 7,000. This is what I shoot sports with and have had reasonably good results. My results are limited by my abilities and not the limits of the equipment.

Since you already have a 7D II which is a good sports camera, you could just go with a 24-70 f2.8 and a 70-200 f2.8 and save some money unless you just want go spring for a FF.

This is just an opinion. Your mileage might vary.

I am a part time Sports Freelance Photographer, I shoot several events a week for the news paper and local media outlets. Going with the 1DX over the 1DXll can save you about 2000 and you have basically the same abilities. The reason I said 300 over the 400 is, unless you are shooting alot of pro and college football a 300 will work. A 400 2.8 is what all of the full time guys use. You can always use a 1.4 tele to get the 400mm range and on a 1DX body that can handle the ISO f4 at night under the lights wont effect you much.

That would do it. There's obviously no need to spend $8,000. Of course, a disposable digital camera would be even cheaper. Anyone who takes more than a couple of hundred pictures a year probably has too much time on their hands anyway.

A couple hundred! Wow! That is more than one every other day!!! Sounds like a lot of work!

On the other hand a couple hundred GOOD pictures a year would be ok.

Now that's funny, I don't care who you are.
I have a contract event Sunday shooting an Iron Man Triathlon. 6 to 7 hours shooting, expected shutter count, 4,000 to 5,000.
Thank god I don't have to process them. I get 500 to 700 out of one high school football game and a 1,000 out of a D1 Football Game.
You better have the right gear to handle the rigors of shooting sports.

You can get some decent mileage out of your 8000.00 if you get a used Nikon D4 and used Nikkor 200-400 F4. The D500 is a great camera, but not as nice as a D4 in low light/high ISO situations. In fact, not even close.
