The Most Difficult Shot Ever

Today was a really cool outing to the LA Zoo, followed by a trip to downtown to capture the skyline.

1) This snake is absolutely the hardest image I've ever tried to capture. The window on the enclosure was absolutely filthy, the reflections were horrendous and the snake was really, really active, moving very rapidly. I'm sharing the original image and the Photoshop version so you can compare and see what I was up against. It took a very long time to get this shot using a Nikon D850 with a 24-70mm, f/2.8 lens @ 70mm, ISO 400, 1/100th, f5.

2) It was a gray, overcast, June Gloom day in LA and we only saw little bits of sun. By the time we got to this spot to photograph the skyline, it was completely overcast. Well, that couldn't stand, so I decided to add my own sunset. Interestingly, one of the photographers on the outing is married to the creator of Photoshop. She was impressed when I showed her some of my Photoshop work, so I'm getting better at it all the time. It's FUN!

Hope you enjoy the set.

Great result. Whenever I visit a zoo I always take a small spray bottle with window cleaning fluid and a microfibre cloth to try and clean the glass then hold the lens hood right against the glass to minimize the reflections, especially if using flash.

Good job. I suggest that you buy a polarizing filter if you plan on shooting other subjects with reflections or glare.

Very nicely done, a really good job. The snake appears to be ready for a meal - he’s rather ‘flat’! The sunset picture is quite stunning - nice masking as well, and the touch of colour to the road is perfect.
