When I first started watching railroads, ATSF and NYC ran a "pool train" between ATSF's Galesburg IL yard west of Chicago and NYC's Elkhart IN yard east of Chicgo, bypassing Chicagoland. Conrail eliminated the track that was used by those trains, but BNSF and NS seem to run more "pool trains" than ever, mostly crude oil trains, so I regularly see BNSF locomotives in Elkhart. Yesterday I saw this "patch" unit, over twenty years after the merger that created the BNSF

Note: the only 'train watcher" access to this major yard is to park on the shoulder of the road that runs along the north side of the yard {NS is very concerned about trespassing!}, so this is one of the few places I take pictures looking towards the sun. Usually I come by on cloudy days; this time 11am was cloudy, but it turned out that my lens had a smudge on it, so I came back in late afternoon {sun was out now} when the sun angle wasn't too bad.
Thank you for posting that! I thought all the "Warbonnets" (and other ATSF engines) had been repainted by now. That is really nice to see. And the paint still looks fairly fresh!

BNSF did paint some of their own 'warbonnets', with "BNSF" on the side instead of "Santa Fe", but I was shocked to see this. Do they go 20 years between paint jobs?
