Setting up to shoot macro with a flash, I had problems. Mostly overexposure .Ended when I used a Zeiss wet wipe. Rubber band over flash to hold used wipe. That is penny pinching. I spent the last ten years getting equipment. Hope to spend rest of my life learning how to use it. My biology background assures subjects, hope to do them honour (for English Brenda). G' nite all.
Hope to see some posts real soon.
Good luck with it. I've used tissue paper, tracing paper, a piece of translucent white milk jug. The best for me is thin sheets of packing foam.
Hi Bill, yes diffusion makes all the difference. Are you using the camera's flash or a speedlight. Most of the macro members use a speedlight with a 6" x 8" (or similar) diffuser fitted to it. Also there are many options for homemade diffusers or various materials. I use a Yongnuo speedlight which is considerably less expensive than most and works very reliably. Your biological knowledge is very useful to us and to you. Keep your photos coming, we are all learning and having the same decisions to make.
next to good focus flash is the most important thing in macro.i also use a Yongnuo speedlight with a cheap diffuser from ebay (about $10) i added a sheet of vellum paper to it
95% of the field macro-photographers on this forum use diffused speedlight on their hand-held macro set-ups.
