Can't edit Nikon Raw in Photoshop

I used to be able to edit my raw photo files in my Windows version of Photoshop from my D70 and I remember having to install a plug-in. I now have a D7100 and I cannot view or edit the raw files. I tried to find a newer plug-in online but what I found was some generic file that included all kinds of cameras and was not specific to Nikon and it did not work. The further I looked it seems like now I have to pay for a plug-in. Is that the way it is now? Can anyone guide me on what to try? On a side question, are the raw files different from camera version to camera version?

RAW files are unique for all camera types, even within the same brand. What version of PS are you using? This will help determine viable options for what to do next if you want to keep the same PS software.

Use the Adobe DNG converter. As far as I can tell it doesn't alter the RAW data (Others may report differently). It is a free download. It work for me.

If you have an older version of Photoshop and a new camera body, your version of Photoshop may be too old to support the newer raw files. This is a common problem and is how Adobe gets people to upgrade their version of Photoshop. Now days, Photoshop is offered as a subscription for $9.99/month and is always kept up to date for all popular cameras and their unique raw files.

Rocky, as mentioned without knowing which version of PS you are using, it's difficult to forward a solution, other than those provided. However, if you decide to use the DNG route, keep your NEF files. Those contain data that DNG discards. You may wish to review that data at some point in the future.

If your computer can handle new software, upgrading to something current will be your best long term solution. I do not suggest dng - it is a format that Adobe had hoped would become a standard for raw, but it isn't.

I use Photoshop and Lightroom - and it only costs $120/yr - a little more than a single application. On1 Raw is pretty good, reads many raw formats - and is getting better every time they issue an update. But it is far from a complete application, there are many things that cannot be done, or done easily compared to Photoshop and Lightroom. If you buy into On1, you can do that before May 31st for $80, then you will pay another $80 when they upgrade it, and pretty much each time they upgrade it - if you want to not find yourself in the current situation again down the road.

I had to wait to get home from work to get the exact version of Photoshop. It is CS6 or More specifically: Adobe Photoshop Version: 13.0.1 (13.0.1.3 20131024.r.34 2013/10/24:21:00:00) x64. I am barely of amateur quality and seldom need to use Photoshop but now that I have a better digital camera I wanted to experiment more. Buying another product is not very appealing to me. I did try the DNG but it did not seem to work. Either that or there is something in the process I did not do. thanks for all of the responses.

The first time I tried DNG converter it didn't work. Then I realized I was trying to open the folder that contained the NEF files rather than just selecting it.

The DNG files drop some information that Adobe doesn't use when editing raw images, primarily picture control settings.

Of course, the first thing you should do is make sure your version of CS6 has the latest updates.

Rocky,

The free solution is DNG Converter. It gets an update every time Lightroom Classic does. It is very efficient and very quick. This video is a little slow, but explains the the process well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECDBy7agFBo

Around a $100 or slightly less is Photoshop Elements. It come with a current ACR system built in. A few of the ACR tools are missing but they aren't significant.

I agree that the best solution is Gene's to subscribe to the Photographer plan at $10 a month. You get a lot more than you need, but it is fun to always have tools and techniques to learn.

Download the free trial of any software you want - typically you can use it free for 30 days. Then you can make up your mind.

If you don't want to download or even consider buying software or subscribing to a plan, then just shoot jpegs and I am sure they will be good enough for you. Or you can deal with the myriad of free software titles out there and wade through the swamp so to speak until you find one that fits your needs. You're in the driver's seat on this.

This is complicated as each camera's raw file is a little different, even within the same brand. Therefore Adobe raw file support is at the camera level. Adobe publishes two tables. The first one identifies the plug-in version required for each camera. The second one identifies plug-in version supported by each Photoshop product release. You can check out these links.

may be you just have to update the ACR to a newer version. As you said you have CS6 and I think CS6 should be able to open the NEF files from the D7100 as it's not a new camera.

I have moved onto 2018cc but use to run CS6. Presently shooting with a D7100. I've got to believe we are stumbling over our own feet and the answer is right in front of us. Is there Adobe Bridge in CS6? File format is a NEF file. I shoot in both Jpeg and NEF and have no issues. Contact Adobe. I've got to believe it's something very simple.

Good shooting

Yes, what version of Ps are you using? There are a lot of years between the D70 and D7100 cameras. I'm using Ps CS6 with the final version of ACR it can use, ACR9.1.1. That and Widows 10 should work for your D7100 NEF but possibly not a D7200. Noting the vintages of cameras being similar, my system reads my Pentax K-3 RAW PEF files OK but seems to not be able to read those from a K-3 mk ii.
