I am new!!!! I am using Luminar software for my computer editing of raw images. The problem I have is that when I bring my images onto my photo drive, because they are raw, I cannot identify them prior to loading them into luminar. I am sure there must be a solution but am looking for help. Thanks Mike

It depends on the brand of camera. Each maker uses its own extension. For Nikon, it would be DSC0001.NEF. Sony is ARW, etc. Also, they will be very large compared to JPEGS.

If you are wanting to do what I think you are, see the images on the photo drive, you probably need an updated codecs.
I'm not all that familiar with Macs put I understand that you should be able to view RAW files with out needing a viewer.

I am using canon Digital Photo Professional which lets me store images from my card. When I want to bring an image from my storage disc the images are there but because they raw it is hard to identify them when I want to bring them individually into my editing software.

You might try Canon technical support. Explain the type of computer / laptop you're using and the OS and ask if there's something to download and install from Canon that will display the RAW images without having to use DPP. Assuming the answer is "yes", they can point you to where to obtain that tool. The call should be free minus your wait time. Start with 1 (800) 652-2666 and have both your camera and computer handy and ready for the phone call.

I save RAW+JPEG and simply use Windows explorer to peruse the files once transferred to the computer. If I see an image (JPEG) I want to edit, I open the RAW in my editor. (They have the same file name, different extension.)

That is a solution. Unfortunately it forces you to use more space on your card and your photo store device. It seems that that maybe the only solution. Thanks for your help!!

There is other software that might work for you; it did for me when I had the same issue.

But others have mentioned getting an update to the Windows coding that would allow you to see the image. That's the issue, right? You aren't able to see the file as a photo? (the preview jpg-within-the-raw)

I have eight cards that will allow me to store up to ≈2,700 images in RAW+Large JPEG (which I clear when transferred to the hard drive and are backed up); and a 2Tb hard drive. Storage is not a problem.

will this program allow you to rename your files as you're storing them? make it easier for you to identify?
Luminar may not be your best choice right now; seems that most/all of the PC users have problems - works
much better for Mac.

All of your Canon raw images have a file extension of cr2. Do you not see the the file extensions? What do you mean "When I want to bring an image from my storage disc the images are there"? When you say "bring" do you really men open? And what you you mean by "storage disk"? Are you referring to your computers hard drive or to an external backup drive? Finally when you say that DPP lets me store images from my card, what do you mean. DPP does not contain an import feature and doesn't store anything anywhere. It only points to the location of images. I think the issue you are having may be a lack of familiarity with the Windows file management system.

Mike, welcome to the Hog, like Silvers, I too am confused by what you mean, or are trying to do?
I too use DPP and have no problems whatsoever.
I do create a subfolder called "ToLR", because I use Light Room. But I work on maybe only 1 out of every 100 shots taken in LR, so very few and the folder stays pretty uncluttered.
I do that for each shoot since DPP downloads by Date. Every day is a separate folder.

I use luminar on a Windows 10 system. When I open a file I see the thumbnails in medium size. I can change this the large size or to detail mode. Laminar uses MS standard file open code, so yoh should not have a problem displaying thumbnails prior to opening. I also use photo gallery to review cr2 files before I get to laminar to delete image that are not worth pp.
