Check your local community college for photography classes and stay tuned in to UGG. You might check for a photo club meeting near you. There are also many very good books available to help you get started.

There are many guide books available by authors like David Busch, Darrel Young, Thom Hogan, Dennis Thomas. What camera do you have?

Also, do a search online for both camera clubs and photography meetup groups in your area. A lot of people form groups using the Meetup.com website.

First click "Edit" at the bottom of your post. Then click "Choose File" and "Add Attachment". Be sure to check the "store original" box. If you do that people can see the metadata in the file and make better recommendations.

In the mean time there is a lot of information at http://digital-photography-school.com/.

Read the manual,
re-read the manual,
hold the camera while re-reading the manual.
Experiment.

First learn the exposure triangle.

If you learn better in a classroom environment, then look at your local Community College or your local camera store. One of our local camera stores has a full slate of courses ranging from the exposure triangle to advanced Photoshop.

If you learn by teaching yourself then there are a plethora of books that can teach what you are seeking. Start with the exposure triangle and then find a guidebook written for your camera. Don't forget the camera's owners manual. Read it, then read it again. Then read it once more. You need to get to the point where camera operation becomes second nature.

I don't know how technically minded you are. Not doubt the scientific and technological aspects of photography are both fascinating and somewhat daunting for the newcomer. How you wish to learn and educate yourself is a matter of how you learn best and feel most comfortable with- classes, books, club activities online resources etc.

It's easy to become preoccupied with equipment issues, features and performance but please don't forget about the fun and artistic facets of this visual art. Decide what you like to photograph and how you can use your images for self expression. Some of the great advantages of digital photography is the absence of film and processing costs and the instantaneous access to you images as you create them. This enables lots of practice, trial and error, and immediately testing out techniques as you learn them.

Photography will make you a more visually observant person. You will become more aware of light, detail, texture and dimension.

Enjoy!

1. Read the camera manual.
2. Read the software manual.
3. Read a basic book on beginning photography, Moose Peterson is good, as well as many others (or video).
4. Use your camera over and over again, look at your shots to determine how to improve them, and shoot some more.
5. Be careful who you listen to for advice.

Welcome to the Hog! My advice: Just begin shooting pictures and doing what you enjoy with photography. The questions will automatically 'pop up'. It's then you can begin asking... on this site, on Youtube, you can Google for answers from many sources. Don't try to answer a question before it presents itself. Remember, you must be IN the water, before you start swimming. Good luck, and the main thing: Have Fun with this terrific hobby.
