105mm f/2.5 should be on the list. An old manual lens. I think it was used to take the famous Afghan girl portrait.

My favorite Nikon film lens, by far. Good compromise between speed and reach, great performance even wide open.

And both contrast and sharpness from corner to corner.

While I probably used my 28/2.8 for more images, IMO the 105/2.5 is the finest lens Nikon has ever made and superior to almost any other 35mm lens from any brand.

I agree I mistakenly wrote 100mm meaning 105mm.

Best I've ever actually used? By far and away, the Nikon 135/2.0 Ais. Out of my reach price-wise, I borrowed one from a friend for a portrait shoot. Prints from Plus-x put my Hasselblad to shame. Embarrassingly to shame.

This was early in my career. As time went by I, as well as most of the other shooters in my NYC circle, had faced the cold hard truth: while the Hasselblad 500 series camera, form and function, was a brilliant design and a joy to use; the Zeiss lenses were terribly overrated. Put more bluntly, soft.

That would have been close 30 years ago. Does it even matter? Debates of reality vs. hype can go on forever.

How about the 105 (or 135mm) DC (f/2.0) lenses, extremely SHARP.
