OMG, where to begin. If you don't do anything else stop in Keene Valley and go to the Noonmark Diner and have a piece of pie ( they are famous for their pies) and take a picture of that. Then go out and enjoy photographing the High Peaks of the Adirondack Mountains.

"Andirondack"! Dare you to say that five times fast. Many can't say it even once.

Forget going to Canada. You'll have too much to do before you even get close!

Lest we forget. 1. Keep your eyes on the road. 2. Keep your mind focused on the road. 3. Let your navigator plot the course. 4. Talk to people whenever you stop. (Even take a photo of them.) 5. Focus on items 1 and 2! 6. Keep us posted. And most importantly, 7. Be safe!

And don't forget to share your captures with the rest of us.

I'll be driving to/from Phila. to Montreal along I-87 in a few weeks and will have my camera with me. I will have some time to stop if there is anything worth stopping for in upstate NY?

Nah, we all know upstate NY is blow through country.
If you are in a hurry I can't help. But if it is to see things try 9W or any other non freeway road going that way. There is so much to see and do in each small community.
Freeways are a waste of effort. I found I 87 very boring when I was forced to take it for time issues. I missed so much of local color of small restaurants and sights.

Ausable Chasim is about 10 min off 87 (Northeast along 9) at exit 34. I have two shots in my gallery https://mymindseye.us/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=2 or you can Google Map it. I found it accidentally when coming from Port Kent YEARS ago (film camera). I made a U-turn to go back and see it.

and don't forget the Albany area, but more importantly, the Saratoga County area.... If the trip is in August, the Saratoga Race Track is running with most of the top horses in the nation....there is the Saratoga Battlefield, operated by the National Park Service, considered the turning point in the American Revolution...there is the Champlain Canal and the start of the Erie Canal (in Waterford) has the famous set of locks, six of them lifting boats around the Cohoes Falls. Further north is Lake George with Fort William Henry, and on Lake Champlain is Fort Ticonderoga....
...and another suggestion is to divert off the Northway (I-87) and take the ferry across Lake Champlain to Burlington, Vt. There you will find the Shelburne Museum, Vermont Teddy Bear Company, and what is likely to be the prettiest small city in the country (please, I'm not trying to start an argument). The highway from Burlington to Montreal is a nice ride as well.

I could go on, but you'll never make your destination.....

Among other things north of Albany you get into the Adoronacks, Saratoga (great for 19th century mansions), the Saratoga Battlefield National Park—site of the most significant battle of the American Revolution, Ticonderoga, Lake George, Lake Champlain...it’s a really beautiful region with a lot of 18th century history.

If I recall, I-87 is a regular interstate, not the NY State Thruway north of Albany or so, with lots of chances for detours. There is an interesting memorial atop a small rock cliff in the median somewhere south of Keene. (I can check the location from my cousin if you are interested. He salutes every time he passes it.) The U.S. flag is the only man-made thing visible in the area, aside from the road, of course. Not a natural wonder but a reminder of sacrifices along a highway built by a soldier.

I87 is the NYS thruway, when you get to Albany it swings west through Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo.

I-87 is the NYS Thruway until it gets to Albany, NY. At Albany exit 24, I-87 heads north towards Saratoga Springs, Lake George, Lake Champlain, Plattsburgh. This part of I-87 is not the NYS Thruway. The NYS Thruway becomes I-90 once you pass Albany. I-90 goes north towards Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo.

You've got to be kidding. Anything worthwhile in the Hudson Valley??
West Point, Washington's Headquarters (Newburgh), FDR & Eleanor (Hyde Park), CIA (Culinary Institute, Hyde Park), Bear Mountain Bridge, Storm King Mountain & Highway, Walkway over the Hudson, Storm King Art Center.................................

Olana near Hudson, NY home of Frederick Church of the Hudson River School of painting, Saratoga trotter track, Lake George, Fort Ticonderoga, Lake Placid (home of the 1980 Winter Olympics and the Miracle on Ice) which is in Adirondack State Park, the largest park in the lower 48. Need any more?

As someone who grew up in upstate NY, my advice is to get off of I-87 and either take Rt. 9 (east side of the Hudson River) or 9W (west side of River). There are beautiful towns on both sides of the river (and some ugly cities!). I would continue on Rt. 9 north of Albany. People have mentioned sites south of Albany, but Fort Crailo (in Rennselaer) is right across the river from Albany. Fort Crailo is the site where "Yankee Doodle" was written; it is an old, blockhouse style fort. Schenectady (15 to 20 miles west of Albany) has the Stockade, a colonial era section of the city. Schenectady is also home to Union College. North of Albany is Saratoga and Saratoga Springs, Glens Falls, Lake George (the lake AND the village). Further north is Fort Ticonderoga. There is much to see and photograph in upstate NY!

If you can get time to visit colleges and older industrial cities, my favorite is Troy, across the Hudson from Albany and home of Renssaeler (biased slightly by being an alumnus.) Other wise agree with the quoted post; stay on I-87 if you want to make time, stay off I-87 if you want to see the country side.
