HANDY TRAVEL ITEM

While packing my gear for an upcoming trip, I realized that I always bring something thing that is rarely considered-- a roll of DENTAL FLOSS and an appropriate size NEEDLE. So far, I have used it (aside from the obvious purpose) for:
(a) Repairing a ripped seam on luggage
(b) Re-attaching a cap-keeper whose cord had broken
(c) Emergency shoe lace (white laces on black shoes make a real fashion statement),
(d) Tying various packages (numerous occasions)
(e) Hanging a small speaker on a bike
(f) Various other times that I have forgotten.

Just make sure that the floss is strong enough (I don't like the kind that shreds).

Hope you never have to resort to this, but if you do, I hope it rescues you.

Interesting solution that I'm sure comes in handy

Sounds like what I did as a wedding photographer for many many years.

True story, I swear.

A crying bride whose shoe tip ripped her gown open, was crying and distraught
,....solved ,....I sat her down, dropped to my knee, took a threaded needle out of my bag,...and sewed up the tear in her gown,..
suitable enough to not only to win over the bride,..but the entire wedding party and families that day.

White chalk also solved many woes easing bridal tears on occasions.

But hands down,...it was safety pins that saved the day to resolve emergencies during most weddings.

Sorry to get off track,....it just brought back those memories.

But why dental floss and not thread...or a small sewing kit with pins etc...as others carry? Am I missing something?

I have found that Dental Floss is more versatile. You can use it as thread (I don't think that regular thread would have held my luggage together), string (thread as a shoelace?), clothes line in the shower (light things only), etc. Besides, I bring it with me anyway (Did you ever try flossing with thread?).

Dental floss is VERY strong, much more so than thread. As former military, I use(d) it to reattach buttons as well as making strong repairs on the fly. Buttons reattached with floss will never again present a problem as the adjacent material will give way first. Also, dental floss (white) may be colored with a felt pen or marker to match similar garment colors. Give it a go and see for yourself.

This is an interesting post, but I can’t help but be reminded of the Frank Zappa song ‘Montana’ (Movin’ to Montana soon, Gonna’ be a dental floss tycoon).

No, it's a supplement to duct tape--they meet different needs--I always travel with both (not a big roll of duct tape but small camping size just enough to save the day).

My wife has been singing the praises of dental floss as long as I have known her, the early '70's. We were "campers" for many years and I can't tell you how many tent repairs were made with dental floss. It is very strong. and water resistant. Get some.

When I was a teacher, I always had a supply of safety pins in my desk. I became the favorite of many a distressed teen-age girl, when the word spread that I would give them away "no questions asked." I still don't know what they were used for. I assumed they helped repair some unseen item of appearal.
