I have lots of this type photo! LOl....just a hair (or a wing) off! I have a nest right outside my door! About 200 feet away & 50-75 feet up in a broken Ponderosa Pine Stump! These Acorn Woodpeckers are raising a family up here. Been coming & going all day! I will be trying for a really GOOD one!

Very good attempt. As the old saying goes, practice, practice, practice. I have quite a few shots of the same type and I'm sure most folks who shoot birds can say the same.

Here's a little trick. Since they are going in and out of the nest I would set camera on tripod, set lens to manual focus, and prefocus on the entrance to the nest. Now as the birds enter, exit, press the shutter button. This should help you nail the little guys.. Good-Luck

Great advice Martinfisher! In fact I was doing that exact thing when I saw this one approaching on the wing & grabbed the tripod & camera to capture it in the air! LOL...it doesn't work well, waving a long bundle around to get the bird in view! As you see.

Next I will sit in a chair & try hand holding the camera to get them in flight. I did get some on the nest & stump I will post elsewhere.

Thanks. Walt

This made me go Oh shoot! Or reasonable facsimile of that, it is fun to have the challenge. Thanks for the encouragement. Walt

You will get it eventually but you are using the wrong tool for the job. It's very difficult to get a point and shoot camera to trigger the shutter at just the right time. There is usually such a huge lag from the time it focuses to the time the shutter releases that it's almost impossible to get a fast moving animal. The same it true with underwater cameras when trying to capture fish. The shutter lag is very annoying with this type of camera.

Tripod, remote release and speedlight with flash extender along with the manual focus is a recipe I've found to be very productive.
