A little help on ring shots

I am going to be a second at a wedding this next weekend and the day before the wedding I will be taking "memory" shots (I am lucky that I will have access to these things a day ahead so I don't have to worry about them the day of!) Does anyone have any thoughts on what I have done using my own rings - any special cheap "tools" that would come in handy to take with me besides my ordinary flash equipment and such? Will be practicing all week. (these are handheld w/ my Tokina 100 but will be using a tripod and remote trigger)

First shot is a classic but rings get kind of lost and overpowered by flowers. Maybe zoom in closer, even throwing flowers out of focus somewhat? Really like 2nd shot. Maybe a 3rd with ring setup of #2 and flowers of #1 (brides at actual wedding) in background out of focus?.

When I shot weddings I use to do a shot of ring hands on wedding license (decades ago). Maybe update would be rings on license? Just thinking out loud.

Google ring shots. You will see many ideas there. Practice beforhand. Its all about the lighting. Getting the accoutrements a day ahead is fantastic.

On your first pic, the flower should fill the frame so the rings are prominent.
2nd shot is cool but a little tigheter there qould be good also. The only time when it should be not as tight is when you are staging the rings with another interesting prop like high heels, Bible pages etc.

Thank you Stardust! I agree, the rings just don't stand out enough with the flower filling the shot - like the idea for the bouquet!

Thank you so much crazydad - the lighting is my problem - I need to rig up something that will shine from above and the side so I still get that sparkle - may try photostacking as well. I am going to ask bride if there is something that they love in common that would make for a cool ring shot!

Well Deer2ker, I had an awesome reply done, and decided to click the download on the last photo to better respond, and like an idiot, I ended up losing what I was typing, so I'll try to restate what I said. (probably not as eloquently, since I am ticked at myself now)

First, I like the technique, and the downloads look a LOT better than the "regular uploads"
On the first one, notice how the gold looks gold. A lot of times, they will look silver, or get silver highlights like on your second photo.

The reason it worked in the first one, is that the light is bouncing off the yellow flower. It is a classic ring shot, but I tend to avoid them when using a gold or yellow rose, because the rings get lost.

To get rid of the silver highlight on the second one, get a small gold reflector, and bounce your light off that. Just a small 12" reflector is perfect for ring shots. Of course, every time I bring one to a wedding, I end up losing it, so do this at your own peril. I do think the second one is really pretty on download, but it still has an extremely shallow DOF. I like the background, but I think the rings should be more in focus, so focus stacking would probably give you some more control over keeping the soft background, but the focus not falling off so quickly on the rings.

What you have to keep in mind with ring shots is, the fads with those come and go as quickly as any fads, so if you find something that is really special to them, try to incorporate that into the shot. It may be something that has to do with where they met, when they met, their favorite thing to do, or whatever. Even if the shot type goes out of style, because of the next new Pinterest fad, they will still LOVE the photo.

Mine has a bible, but I've done them with sports teams, college stuff, you just never know.
