Further to my post -"Update" a few days ago. I have decided based on limited finances to go for a Nikon d3300 and AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED- Sorry about the Caps I'm not shouting -copied and pasted this from the Nikon site. Anyway my question to anyone who picks this up is as follows. Are the two bits of kit compatible - I have read suggestions that they may not be, so I thought I would run this by you guys : :

According to Nikon, "Optimized for compact DX-format DSLRs..." That's what you're shooting, so you should be okay.

See the post next from ddetloff. Being a DX lens is not enough for older bodies and the new AF-P Nikon lenses. I believe too, for older bodies where the AF-P can be used, a firmware update may be required for some of the camera bodies. http://www.dpreview.com/news/0715775521/nikon-releases-new-firmware-for-nine-cameras-mostly-af-p-lens-compatibility

Thanks CHG - the manual says it should be OK but I will only know when the lens arrives and I can put it to the test - I hope so anxious to get working without having to spend too much more of my dwindling resources.

Compatible? Yes.

Wise? Maybe not.

I'd suggest you spend $50 more (or $40 more if you buy refurbished instead of new... though Nikon refurbished is treated like used, as far as warranty is concerned)....

and get the AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR instead. (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=af-p%2070-300mm%20dx&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ma&Top+Nav-Search=)

Image stabilization is very helpful on longer telephotos... and a 300mm lens on an APS-C/DX camera is a quite long telephoto that can be difficult to hand hold steady. VR can help and well worth the relatively slight additional cost. (Frankly, I'm surprised that Nikon even developed and produced a version of this lens without VR!)
