Hi everyone -- I am thinking about upgrading from the Nikon D5300 to a better Nikon -- need to stay with the Nikon since I have a couple of Tamron lens' with Nikon mounts.

I take mostly landscapes and wildlife, almost always outdoors either hiking, on horseback, on a boat and at various times of day.

I am looking for a Nikon that would give me better megapixals and still be good in various lighting conditions from low light to bright sunshine. Plus I want to start learning how to take night photos.

I have been looking at the D810 but keep seeing where it has a tough time at low light....anyone comments on that?

Need to stay under $2000 so the new D850 is out.

What would you all recommend me looking at? Also, would you ever buy used or reconditioned instead of new?

Thanks everyone

D7200 is a nice step up but if you want to really jump go to the d500! Going full frame
will require some different lenses depending on what you already have.

I Agee that the 7200 is a great choice and certainly the D500. The highISO capability the 500 is very good.
As to the need for more megapixels, unless you regularly PRINT 16x20 and larger, you don't need 'em. Upgrade for other reasons, but probably not for the megapixels.

I also agree that going to the full frame cameras makes no sense since you stated staying under 2K and that move will require a few more grand in lenses.

I don't think your going to find a Nikon camera with more mega pixels than your D5300 that's under $2000.00. The D750 will probably be your best bet along with the cheaper D7200. You don't really need 36 pixels unless your making huge prints or do a lot of landscape photography. Good luck.

Thanks everyone....I should have said I have the Tamron 16-300mm and the Tamron 150-600mm lens with the Nikon mount. I do have 4 frames in my house that are 18x24 that I like to enlarge prints and swap the photo's out in...that's one of the main reason's I wanted a higher megapixel camera.

I will look at the D7200 and D750.

How about new vs refurbished vs used? Which would you do?

I have had great success buying used, especially off this site. Refurbs are a great idea and I wouldn't have
any reservations about it. I would have no problem blowing up some of my images up to 18x24 with
my d7200. The d500 either, with Lightroom it is no problem with any 20+ mp image. A refurbed d7200
will be under 900 bucks and give you the option for another lens! The Tamron's 16-300 lens would be the limiting
factor in your enlargements fyi. Borrow a prime lens and shoot the same photo at the same mm and
you will see what I mean. If I need something super sharp my 85mm f1.8 is the lens I grab.

Thanks -- that makes me feel a little better about used/refurbs. I have a prime lens on my wish list as well as a better tripod ...oh the list just keeps growing

24 Mp is plenty to work with, so that is not your problem. The D7200 body is a big step up over your present camera body...as for shooting at night...a good tripod and a remote release will help.

I do have a remote release but still need a better tripod. Thanks for commenting!

The D3xxx series and D5xxx series Nikons have a pentamirror viewfinder. If you go with a D7xxx or above Nikon you get a pentaprism viewfinder. The glass prism inside gives a larger, slightly brighter view through the viewfinder. I have a D500. Its viewfinder seems to be almost as large as those in full frame cameras.

Along with the D7200 also consider the D7500. It has the same outstanding sensor as the D500.

You have a DX camera, and unless your current lenses are FX lenses, you ought to consider sticking with the DX format, because if you don't have FX lenses already, you'll have to buy all new lenses for an FX camera. Any of the three mentioned, D7200, D7500 and D500 are very good choices and all function well in low light situations. Any by sticking with DX format you won't need new lenses.

Don't be afraid to buy refurbished. There are some good deals on refurbished cameras on the Nikon Store site, and B&H, Cameta and Adorama have some refurb and used cameras. So does KEH. Avoid 42d St. Photo and Abe's of Maine.
