Albino Squirrel

I have never seen one in our neighborhood. We feed the birds and squirrels in our driveway. Houston, Texas

Actually it appears it may be a Gray Morph, a variant of the Gray Squirrel. From what I can see, the eyes are not red. They don't usually live that long, as they stand out like a sore thumb to predators. They just started showing up in our neighborhood a couple years ago (Michigan).

There is a condition about as rare as albinism called "leucystic" in which there is no pigment in the skin, but the eyes have the usual pigmentation - where a true albino would have pink eyes. White alligators get a lot of attention in the south - some are true albinos and others are leucystic. Hard for a pure white animal of any sort to survive predators while they are young! Maybe hawks look at your white squirrel and think: "what the hell is THAT???"
