Hi there, If I have PS Elements 9, is it necessary to upgrade to CS5? What kind of features can I find on CS5 that I cannot do in Elements? I am a budding new professional, so I want to grow my business but I seriously do not know if this is a move I need to spend money on or not. Also, not sure what lightroom is all about, what kind of benefits would it have for me? Thanks!

you may want to check out www.youtube.com and search for video's that show you. I was very impressed with what PS CS5 can do as well as lightroom. I saw about 5-6 different videos and made my purchase. These will help you with your business as it has with mine. mainly all of this depends on what your business is about. Check it out and decide. I'm one of those who must see it in action before I'll even come close to making a decission on a purchase. I hope this helps and good luck!

As to the upgrade -one question that I would ask is do you full know how to use what you have now? My understanding is that Elements include the vast bulk of what you will get the big brother program- maybe as much as 90%. A very pratical consideration for me is - do I have my business set up to the point that such an investment could be deducted off as a business expensise? In any business the bottom line is to at least make it pay for itself and even better to make a greater income. Keep in mind that whatever you purchase comes right off your income - you must be able to justify your expenses against any income, regardless if it is another lens or some software such as a computer program. Only you know your needs, not your wants - only you have an idea of how long it wll take to pay for it out your income.

May I suggest you post your question also on pophoto.com? This site is by far mostly amuteurs, good friendly and very talented but only a handfull use photoshop. I use photoshop 7 so I cant tell you about cs5. Popphoto.com on the other hand has more professionals who can answer your question

Learn how to use what you have to the best it will produce. There is no need to buy a bus when a taxi will do the job .

BOB sums it up perfectly. I would only add, analyze what you want to accomplish and use what will help you do it. If that means you can stay with PSe, then you just saved a tidy bit of cash.

Thanks everyone! I know a good portion of PSE 9, I've been getting around pretty well---I've also purchased actions for Elements that I use pretty regularly, but don't know if I could transfer them to the other version. It would be a definite NO if I had to purchase them again!

I chose the Elements 9 route. I've been told it will do anything I need for the time being. Once I master that, I can move on to the full-blown Photoshop, if that time ever comes. I would also consider CS5.5 because it includes other programs that I can use, like In-Design to lay out a new book.

You can actually get PS CS5 and try it out for 30 days free, but it is extremely complex. If I was you I would learn all I could with PS elements and master it before making that leap if you haven't already. Thats just my 2 cents worth.

They were having an offer right now for $299 for elements users to convert to CS5, so I wasn't sure if that was something I should do or not. Is that even a good price for it?

Yes that a good price. CS5 cost about $695 that the problem with Adobe it very expensive ! Another suggestion is the academic prices it for students and teachers .I bought CS 3 with a friends sons student ID card when I call them on the phone they told it didn't make an difference who it was for so long as they had the Id card info. good luck

Jd , what program do you use now ? You know in cs 5 there is probably so much of it that you will never use. I have cs 3 and it a hand full. But if you know how to use it would be great.
