A little over thinking about this. Do the math and only bring enough batteries and cards for what you may need. I’ve taken many backpacking and canoe trips over a week long. No electric needed. Especially on hiking what you bring you must carry. Canoes are better but space is still a concern. Enjoy the experience first, it sounds great. I’m sure you will still get some great pictures and I hope when you view them they trigger fantastic memories.

I have a Nikon D500 and 2 D200's and have 5 batteries for each. This way I don't waste time charging them. Get a small foldable Solar Panel for your phones and other devices. Learn how to used DC voltage adapters from 12v to 5v or what ever voltage you need with power plug adapters. That's about all you can do in a remote location.

do you buy any of the "special" cards or just ordinary ones? Yes, I can fill them up quite fast as well/

All you have stated here is very good advice. Switching cards for each day is one I hadn't thought of. I kayak often so I have various dry bags in all sizes. AND most importantly, enjoy the trip rather than trying to get those amazing photos that professionals already have on postcards. I am so looking forward to that rush the first time an Orca surfaces near me that I have already decided to just enjoy the experience. A photo can never convey the feeling. Thanks for the hints.

Hi Lynn, I shoot with a Nikon D7100 and on a 3 day trip to photograph a car race, I got close to 5000 (24 mega pixels each) shots (both JPEG and Raw) on two 128Gb cards (neither was full). I have 4 batteries and think I only used 3, but I changed them every day so I could have a fresh, charged battery to start each day. Shooting only Raw, I bet I could have taken 4,000 with the setup I have.

You should be good for 3 days with a few batteries and a 3-4 64Gb memory cards or 4-5 32GB cards (you probably won't use that much space, but better to have than to want :-). Make sure you don't lose any of the cards.

A good dry bag is a must and you might want to consider a waterproof sleeve/cover for your camera similar to this if rain is possible - https://www.peakdesign.com/product/shell?gclid=CjwKCAjwk9HWBRApEiwA6mKWaTuITchIFkUK75DYqDSah98q1RaJyQTh1-Ll2oiDBUgbdjeo2X-iuxoCP9sQAvD_BwE

Hopefully, you'll be getting a lot of your photos from shore and not from a tipsy sea kayak.

Have lots of fun. I look forward to seeing your photos

Spare batteries and multiple cards look like the way to go. A portable charging station looks like an aoption as well.

Go to Harbor Freight and get the Viking Lithium Battery rated at 400 amps and comes with all the attatchments you need to charge anything. It will keep your camera charged for months. About $70 dollars.

The best cards I've used are the SanDisk Extreme Pro. They're fast and dependable.

Alll very good info here. I do have a small point and shoot that I bring as well. Paddling on a choppy ocean and picture taking doesn't seem to go hand in hand. Thanks for your advice.

I love all the advice I am getting here. The company I am going with has a safe place for things that are not coming on the trip. Sounds like I will be leaving my laptop in that place. I love all the info that I have gotten on here by experienced photographers. I was on safari many years ago before DSLRs! I took 65 rolls of film. I did get some great shots but the cost of developing them all was incredible! Wish I had a DSLR all those years ago. But the great moments remain in my head anyway. Thanks for your advice.

My daughter has a waterproof camera that she is letting me take on the trip. She has considered meeting me on the island for this trip, so if she comes, she can handle that one.

I was in the same position last year (kayaking and no access to any electricity) for a week. I took 4 batteries, which was more than adequate.

Thanks so much for your response on the lens. It is difficult for an amateur to know the difference or experience to differentiate without my head spinning. On most of my vacations I hike out and take photos of the wild horses that are still here in the west. Will this lens perform well for those trips? I also go to many Mustang (horses) events and shoot the rides in action. So, this next lens will be to improve the photos of action shots.

Thanks for the advice and the welcome. Enjoy Africa. It was the trip of a lifetime for me. Unfortunately it was before DSLRs. The memories are fixed in my mind even if the photos aren't award winning some are very precious. Enjoy your trip and if you get a chance to take a hot balloon ride at dawn - take it! An amazing experience. Have fun!
