Hello,
I have a D7100 with a 17-55mm 2.8 lens. I’m interested in the Nikon 12-24mm f4 lens for wider angle photos when I do group photos indoors with flash. My question is how much of a difference would I see with 12mm vs. 17mm? Thanks!!

No BS. No demeaning the person who asked the question. Just a good straight informative answer. Very good presentation.

Thanks, and for what it’s worth, I am in love with the new NIKKOR 10-20 AFS-P VR.

If it works with your DSLR, I think it is but check to be sure, it’s wider than the 12-24 and razor sharp ... and a good bit le$$$$.

I once asked my brother the electrical engineer what the difference was between 3G and 4G--his response was... 1G!

But back to photos--I like the wider anger of view in general, but especially for indoor family gatherings. Given that I shoot ambient light almost always, my only comment would be that I've had some trouble with the flash not providing full coverage--probably due to lack of practice using the flash on my part. Bounce flash works though.

Canon 7d with 10-22mm zoom, Speedlight (if/when I remember to bring it along)

And yes, he-my brother that is-did not offer any further explaination beyond 1G--still a good guy. Wish he had had an illustration as above though.

This may also be useful, though it starts at 14mm:

Just be prepared for a LOT of distortion when using that wide on people photos.

I'm not saying don't use, it, but keep people as close to the middle as possible anyway. If you have them from one side of the frame to the other, be prepared for the people on the sides to get pretty angry with you for making them look so "wide"

In addition to the great graphic posted by LWW, it's important to be aware of this with wider lenses:

Nice examples of what I was talking about. Wide lenses aren't necessarily good for group photos, because o what the distortion does to those on the ends.

I’m glad I asked this question before buying something I might not be happy with. I guess I’ll stick with my 17-55 DX f 2.8. I get no noticeable distortion at 17mm. Thanks to all who replied.
