Low usage

Just looking for an opinion. Ran into a deal on a camera and I found the ad a little misleading. Ad stated camera was low usage and was hardly used. When I inquired about how many shots were actually on the camera I was told the rating is 150,000 and the shutter count is 24%, which equates to 36,000 shots. Is this really considered low usage and hardly used? My thinking is low usage and hardly used would be no more than 5,000 shots. Maybe I am wrong ................

On the positive side the camera is in mint condition, as in not a mark on it, and looks new. It also appears to work correctly.

I have a Nikon that is really close to that. I would see if you could try it out and see if every thing works right. That meaning inside and outside. A few shots should tell you if it really is working right.

60% of new (at most), whatever the camera originally retailed for. You mention 'ad,' so one would presume you haven't had a chance to actually check it out shooting-wise? Exterior appearances can be misleading.....

Grab it, you will love the camera. But be sure you have return privileges if its not as described, and check the shutter count ASAP. 36k on that body is nothing.

Thanks ..... Going to check it out on Wednesday. I had a D300 and stupidly sold it and been kicking myself ever since. Loved the camera. Mine was also in mint condition but only had 10K shots.

I have one with over 400k and it still works great. Nikons pro shutters are rediculously under rated for life. I have 318k on my D800E as well.

It all depends on the price. At 36,000 the price should reflect that. If it does not, don't buy it. However, if you are an AVERAGE USER, the camera may outlive you. And that 150,000 is only a stated life, you could get more or less than that. Lastly, shutters are not real expensive to replace if it does go bad.

I would say for a camera as old as that it would be low usage. I recently gave one away, but I hung on to and still use one. I don't know why, but there is something about that camera I really like. When you go to check it out, bring a lens in case they have none available.

I had a D300S and sold it to a photo journalist when I bought the D500 from MT Shooter. He had one D300S and was buying mine for his wife who kept taking his. It's a great camera.

"Camera is a Nikon D300 and the asking price is $250 with charger, battery, manual and 128GB compact flash"

A camera with 36k shutter actuations is a well used camera. I believe that the shutter for those cameras was made to withstand approximately 150k actuations.
The price appears reasonable but if I was in need of a D300 I would prefer a camera will less use. A camera with that shutter count in my opinion needs service and if you go for it you will need a quote first to see if it makes financial sense to spend the money.
Without service to check AF, shutter accuracy and meter accuracy you are on your own. As you know during service the camera will be lightly lubricated and will be totally cleaned.

Suggestion: Bring both a lens and a laptop with editing program on it. That way you can take some shots and evaluate not only how it feels in terms of performance, but you can also look at the resulting photos. From looking at the magnified photos you can see if there are spots on the sensor, which would indicate it needs cleaning. If the seller took good care of the camera, the sensor ought to be clean. Inquire about service history, and if it has never been to a repair and cleaning facility, the person may very well do the sensor cleaning.

As MT Shooter said, it is a good price, especially since it includes everything you listed!
