Sure brings back a lot of memories of a great camera. Thanks for the post.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. When Nikon was KING.

The Leica boys of that era would argue very strongly with you about that statement. I remember sitting and observing some of these friendly but heated debates over who was King. The Leica lovers were by far more emotionally attached to their beloved Leicas.
I still have my original Nikon F with meterless pentaprism as I always preferred a hand held meter.
The clip on meter you have is something I have never seen before.

I knew there was a bunch of old guys on this forum, but I never realized how much we have in common. I, too, have had cameras stolen. I lost my Ftn along with the 50mm, 85mm f1.8, and a 200mm f4 to my daughter's drug addict boyfriend. I figured it was a small price to pay to get rid of him forever, however, I really miss the 85mm!

Sorry to hear that.
I loved my 85 1.8.
It was beat to hell, but still one of my favorite lenses, along with my 35mm f/2.
Mine was stolen as well.
My 8008 was taken along with it, but I never liked that camera.
It had no soul.

Forgot to add that I have a WWII Leica plus five lenses. Great camera as well.

I had an 8008 also, and I gave it to my daughter. As you said, it had no soul. I have a pair of N90s's, and they are a whole different breed than the 8008.

Then and now, Leicas are cameras collectors want to collect. Nikons are cameras people actually use.

Of course, there are MANY other worthy brands, but in the 1950s and into the 1980s, Nikons were the primary choice of photojournalists. They were rugged enough to take a beating and still work, and *relatively* inexpensive enough that you could afford to carry two or three of them with different lenses on each — color film in one, black-and-white in the other, and another emulsion in the third. The development of the EF lens line pushed Canon ahead, and Nikon's been #2 or #3 since. Sony (formerly Minolta, then Konica Minolta, then Sony) recently accelerated to the #2 spot in the market.

I had a Nikkormat, then a Nikon FTn, FM, and two F3s... At work, I had a D100 and D70, and used other Nikons my company had. My favorite Nikon of the film era was the F3. I still have my FTn and an F3HP, but no longer use film.

I still have my Nikon F. I bought it in Japan in 1964 at the PX in Yokohama (I was a merchant mariner at the time). In the 58 years since, my progression was been two Cool Px cameras, D80S, D300S, and today's D500. All great cameras in their own way.

Hi Buckwheat,

My original F Body has now been sold off so that I could afford my first F2, it was a 1959 model bought S/H in 1960. Sold to a friend in the early 1980s so I know my original F is still going strong. I missed it so much I ended up buying another a couple of years later which I've still got and use even though I'm well into digital now. It had a selenium meter attached as you describe (still got one, with the booster) and a 50 mm F2 lens (sold on) & a strap. It cost me one hundred pounds Australian (before decimalisation) in Melbourne's Elizabeth St CBD Australia.

The selenium clip-on has a catch and contact on the right side of it in your photo where you could attach a booster for low light capture. Laugh if you like but that combination served me for over a decade and came with me half way around the world - sold off in the UK.

Incidentally, in your last photo I think, the prism is not attached correctly, press it down firmly to put it in it's place, before you go out with it again, or you might lose it. This doesn't suggest that the "NIKON" name plate is loose but it might be worth checking too, just in case as it might be more difficult to replace than the prism. If it is, just screw it on tightly.

Digital cameras have only a few years of life until the more rapidly advancing technologies makes them redundant. The Nikon F you have pictured will last you for many a year more, despite its age, especially now that Kodak is coming out with new film, B&W & Ektachrome (my fingers are crossed for a returning Kodachrome 25, or update of same).

Keep shooting with your favourite faithful, they certainly don't make them like they used to.

Yes, there are still a lot of F users who remember those selenium meters, maybe even a few who still use them.

There are some features on that old F that I wish would be carried over to the current digital, current but inferior versions.

Ron
Hi Buckwheat, br br My original F Body has now be... (show quote)

You must have bought your Nikon from Wagner's at the corner of Flinders Lane. I worked there for a couple of years in the 70's: also at their pro shop in Flinders St. Otherwise it might have been at Michael's.

I've never seen this meter before and had no idea of its existence despite the fact that my first "F" had the plain finder and I was selling the stuff at the time. Thank you for sharing it.

My Nikkormat is long gone but I still have the Nikon F Handbook of Photography 1968 second edition. It is in the original box with the registration card still on the binder. The box has a price sticker from Ken's camera. It is still like new.

How wonderful. Just great to see this iconic camera again. These Nikons and the FM/FM2 were what really got me into photography. Thank you. Pura Vida from Costa Rica.

I still have my Nikon FTN from 1971. Took it on a photo safari to Kenya and Tanzania in March 1972 - all Kodachrome slides (1100 or so). It was also with me all over Europe, USSR (including Trans-Siberian Railroad), Australia and New Zealand, Beijing, Hong Kong, Bangkok and Singapore. Got my first DSLR in 2005 (D200), now shooting with D7200.
