A nod to Allen's in Levittown, PA. My dad discovered Allens in the early 1980's and he ( until his death in 2003) , my brother, and I got our gear there. When Allen died suddenly about 3 years ago, his took over and it is just as ever!

I agree, Elliott, Schiller's is a very good store. My son lives near there so when I go visit, it is handy to stop in. They always seem quite busy, but they have been very helpful when I was looking for something. For example, I needed a new, bigger camera backpack about a year ago. I tried a couple from online vendors but it was hopeless (not the vendors fault but a backpack is kind of i like a new suite - it either fits you or it doesn't). I stopped at CCC in St. Louis but they didn't have the models I was considering. Then I made my first ever trip to Schiller's. They were more than helpful with a very large stock of backpacks. I found one that fit me and concluded the purchase. Since then, I have stopped in a couple of times and plan to give them first chance at selling me a new D850 this year.

There is still a Ritz Camera in the northern suburbs of Baltimore, which is the only one other than Service Photo, to my knowledge. But it does not hold a candle to Service Photo. I don't know whether your "armed" statement is sarcasm or not, and I do not know about the experience of others, but I have seen absolutely no indication that anyone at Service Photo is armed. It is in a safe and very laid back area.

No not sarcasm at all. The last time I was there one of the salesmen was wearing a holster with a hand gun. My brother was a cop in the Eastern District in Baltimore, now retired and he told what I could expect to see once we got into the store and he was right on. Maybe things have changed, it's been several years. Safe and laid back, I thought that store was as well protected as Fort Knox. BTW, great store and service too.

There are, without a doubt, excellent camera stores who have featured mail order services.

But it occurred to me that we still need to endorse our -local- camera stores, especially if they have an excellent reputation.

To begin, I'd like to endorse Schiller's Camera store here in St. Louis, here for more than 100 years, and outstanding staff. I've purchased my Canon 5DII from them, and along with that 3 L series lenses. They are always my "go to" store, not only for the equipment, but also for opinions and advice. I know all of you would agree with me in saying that we NEED to support our local camera stores. So I'm beginning that here with: www.schillers.com

I hope no one minds my beginning thread.

I live in the Arnold area and do most of my camera and supplies at Schiller's. I bought my first DSLR at a Creve Coeur Camera store on Telegraph in the south country area because it was close to me. That store was closed and nearest CCC is in Crestwood. It isn't much further to Schiller's, so I usually go there because it's a larger store than the CCC in Crestwood. I sometimes shop at the main CCC store in Creve Coeur. Both stores have excellent choices, good prices and helpful people.

sad, indeed.
Raleigh is fortunate to still have Southeastern and Peace; incredible for a small city. Both are great.

Amazon is a giant parasite that will hopefully be the target of antitrust action soon.

Baltimore is getting a bad rap in the media because of one or two lousy neighborhoods and the a-holes who live there. For the most part, it is an attractive, interesting and safe place to visit and work. Service Photo is located outside the city limits, and I've never noticed any of their staff "carrying." I shop there on a regular basis and never feel I'm in any danger. I grew up in New York City, so maybe I'm just more comfortable being in diverse surroundings. I just wonder, have you ever been to Baltimore? Or to a big city?

Grew up in Newark NJ and traveled to Maryland on a regular basis. You are correct Md. has a lot of nice area’s, but like many cities today it has its fair share of crime.

Yes, we are still fortunate to have those 2 stores. I do know that Southeastern will match B&H prices (they have for me in the past), so there's no need to order from NYC

Robert's Camera in Indianapolis and the suburb of Carmel, always does a good job! Competitive prices, great lab work and helpful people. If I'm looking for something, I check them first.

In North Jersey (NJ) Unique Photo in Fairfield and Hoboken is outstanding and they carry everything! They also offer free shipping. If in the northern part of New Jersey there is no need to go to NYC to B&H when we have Unique Photo.

When I lived in NY I supported my local camera store, B&H, and paid the sales tax. I now live in a state with no sales tax. Supporting a 'local' store would mean 120 mile round trip. B&H ships free and gets it here the next day. They often have 2 - 4 % cash back. There is no incentive to shop 'locally'. In fact it would, in some cases, be a significant cost.

Thank you!

What information about a product can a store clerk give me that I can't find myself on the internet?

The camera store you want won't hire "a stock clerk," but will hire pros who have experience using the equipment they're selling and can discuss hardware, techniques, etc.

I wonder how many out there in UGH land remember the Fair Trade Law days in the old days in the USA. As I recall stores that sold Fair Trade Law merchandise (such as Leica for example) could only sell it for the Fair Trade Law price. The obvious advantage of this is of course dealers advantage would have to be extra good service which would be for the customer to decide. I wonder how that would work today?

Look around. Isn't this the same as 'unilateral pricing?' The authorized US distributor tells authorized retailers the lowest permitted selling (not advertised) price and the result is most legit stores have the exact same retail price for items protected by these 'unilateral pricing' restrictions.

If memory serves me, in the early 80s, in Wheeling WV there were 2 or 3 full fledged camera stores and that many, if not more, well stocked camera departments in other stores, all with knowledgeable staff. Over the years they've all closed.

I paid probably a hundred more for my XSi at the last Ritz Camera in the area just to support local. They closed about 6 months later.

There may be one, Bernie's, left in Pittsburgh, some 90 minutes away, Campus Camera in Kent Ohio, about 2 hours, or Midwest Photo in Columbus Ohio, about 2-1/2 hours.

My last few small purchases have come from Amazon and my SX710HS from Best Buy. There are NO knowledgeable employees in either place to assist you. You better do your homework and know for what you are laying your money down.

The very last store in Wheeling is paying the bills by applying your digital images to shirts, bags, coats, calenders, wood anything, etc. They don't sell cameras. I can't even find the supposed camera clubs that are rumored to be in the area. For those of you who have a real camera store within half an hour of your door, give them all the business you can. Otherwise don't cry when they are gone. In the fifties, your Dad bragged about how much he paid for his new car. Today everyone wants to Bragg about what extremes they went to, to save the most money. I wish I could give the OP an answer. Unfortunately, I can NOT.
