Frankly, I think the sign is there to protect the cactus--the exhibit people don't want it to be damaged. I doubt very much that they really care about stupid people who might sit on it.

People are indeed that stupid. In addition there are so many "fake" plants (especially cactus) that someone might think it is one with soft thread "spines".
