Apologies in advance if this is a stupid question. However, Someone gave me a Canon 5D. I can see information on the LCD question when I press "menu" and "info". But the screen doesn't come on when I turn on the camera or want to change ISO, white balance, etc. so I can see what I'm doing. There doesn't seem to be a "Screen Off" function.
Is there a 5D user out there who knows what might be the issue?

You push the >button for turning the screen on and off, if you push the info button 3 times you see everything you set on the screen!
But all of that is in the menu!
Thank you. However, I cannot see anything in the menu that relates to your answer! What exactly is the menu topic?

Thank you for that. I do have the manual and, as you point out, the breadth of the information is daunting. So far I can input the settings I want and have done so. The LCD screen had me puzzled though. I'm used to having the screen come on in both my crop sensor Canons.

I apologize in advance... I'm guessing here? Are you thinking that you should be able to use the LCD Screen as a viewfinder for taking photographs? I'm reading your manual, and on Page 36, Section "About the LCD Monitor", it tells me that "The LCD Monitor cannot be used as a viewfinder for shooting."
No, I don't want to use it as a viewfinder. I just want to be able to see what's happening if I press any of the control buttons up top for altering settings - like ISO, altering the F-stop when I'm in Av mode, etc. I can see those changes on my 70D LCD screen.
The original 5D dates to 2005 and will differ in subtle ways from the what is now the 'standard design' for EOS systems. For example, I believe none of the EOS models had a Q button yet back in 2005. I'm not sure about the auto-on aspect of the rear LCD display. Starting my 5DIII also does not display the LCD when I turn the camera on. But for the information you referenced (ISO, F-stop, Av mode), these are all displayed on the LCD panel on the top of the camera.
Yes, I see that. But I'm reasonably sure that at some point, I have seen the same display on the back. I will keep searching for the answer. Thanks for responding.
OK, looks like the 5D doesn't display the info on the back - only on the top. Will have to get used to that.

The top display is pretty handy. Any configuration change takes getting used to. Enjoy the 5D and thank the donor aafter you enjoy the FF results.
Thank you Craig. I will have to practice a bit. Unfortunately, I cannot thank the previous owner who was my sister's husband. He died and she thought he would like me to have the camera because of all the family photos I have taken over the years.
I like the LCD menu functions. I have 5dm4. The screen not coming on until you request it is a power saver. I hit Menu, make whatever adjustments using touch screen and then go to live view. Maybe not the same model as yours.
Pressing the shutter button yields "screen off"
A page from the manual. As with all Canon DSLR's, you use the "Info" button to toggle the LCD on and off. Although, it may not be the kind of screen you see on your 80D or 70D etc, it has some useful info. I'd just use the top LCD when changing common settings such as shutter, aperture and ISO etc.
Also, it will benefit you if you learn where the adjustment buttons/wheels etc are and make adjustments while looking through your viewfinder. The most important settings can be viewed there to as long as the camera is wakened with a half press of the shutter.
