Focusing methods for DSLR video

I have a D7000 and am starting to shoot very short videos to go with my photo shows in Pro Show. While shooting video, will Continuous mode follow a moving subject? Or will Single shot mode do the same thing? Since the shutter button is not used in video, I'm not sure what controls auto-focus if you don't press the shutter. Does the auto-focus just seek the proper focus as you pan over a scene or is it locked in on whatever was already set, like with manual focus? So many questions, so little time. I suppose the test would be to set up on a tripod and pan around to subjects at different distances and see what happens. Thanks for your advice.

The only decent way to shoot video is manual focus. Period.

My video cameras have a function to AF and lock that works. What isn't dependable is continuous auto focusing while recording. The "hunting" can be too obvious.
