"Nikon D600 for Dummies" by Julie King
"Mastering the Nikon D610" by Darrell Young

Aside from one being more up to date, does anyone
have a recommendation as to which would be more helpful?

I always go for the “For Dummies” books! Probably because I am one! I find the explanations far easier to understand than some of the technical books that accompany new equipment, software etc that seems to be written by techie nerds for techie nerds and that is something I would never claim to be. KISS! Keep It Simple Stupid!

"David Busch's Nikon D610 Guide To Digital SLR Photography". I don't know if it's better than Darrell Young's book, but it is better than the "For Dummies" book.

I bought two books that have been helpful
Nikon 610 Experience by Douglas Klostermann and Nikon 610 by Rob Sylvan. Although these book were very informative the best book if you're new to the 610 is the Owner's Manual. I owned a Pentax on the past an decided to up grade to a Full Frame. After purchasing the 610 I looked at several books to help me understand the camera. I bought the two books and started to read them only to realize the books presented to much Information. I went back to learning from the Manual and supplemented the Manual with the two books. Good luck in playing with your 610.

I’ve bought books by Darrell Young before and liked his easy to follow explanations and his style of writing.
Highly recommended. /Ralph

The Dummies books are far too basic. Get David Busch's Nikon D600 guide.

Far too basic for who? I bet there are plenty of people right here on the HOG that could use some basic information.

I would recommend CreativeLive and their D600/D610 video - very good. I tend not to buy the Dummies books - just based on the title.

Just asking. What does one book offer over the other? Why the need for two books?

I have "Nikon D7000 for Dummies" by Julie King AND "Mastering the D750" by Darrell Young.
Both excellent authors but the Darrel Young book is by far more complete and the layout of his book is superb. Very easy to follow.

Thank you, everyone - time to get busy studying once again. At least the homework will be more fun this time around ☺

I have used two David Busch books when I had my D610. They are his Compact Field Guide for the Nikon D610 and the more comprehensive Nikon D610 Guide to Digital Photography. I no longer have a use for them. I would sell both of them to you for $40, shipping by USPS Media rate included. PM me if interested.

The authors explain things differently and may add additional information related to what they are explaining. That is good but the information could be added later after teaching the basic information. It's sorta like a reference book for a reference book.
What I ended up doing is learning the basics from the Manual and use the other books as reference, because they add additional information
