Cruising past Winslow AZ last week we decided to stop and take a look at Meteor Crater and its impressive. Tried a Panoramic photo of this site from the observation point since the impact crater is approx 4000' X 5000', and 560' deep.... its one big hole. What's amazing is this only happened ~50,000 years ago and the meteor that hit was small in size, 150' across, but had a mass of 150,000 Tons and traveling at 8 miles a second....just under the I-40 speed limit I suspect ☺️☺️ Explosion was estimated the equivalent to 10 Million Tons of TNT.
Interesting spot. I've been there a couple of times in my life. Good image to remember it by. Thanks.
Impressive. Is that a man hole cover down there towards center bottom?

From what I understand Lady Red, there were originally some mining years ago and then explorations going on looking for more of the meteor. Now its just scientific exploration going on since its been preserved.

Power of Nature...yes Ramm, wonderful and actually quite scary when you get down to it....especially this blast this 'small' meteor caused.
Excelent photo. Wonder if there was any climate change i.e. global cooling following this incident? Mahalo for sharing.

You're more than welcome JoAnne,.....50,000 years ago, I would image there was some impact, ~10,000,000 tons of tnt going off had to affect something.
Great pano, Blaster, and kind of puts our importance in perspective!

Thanks Swamp Cork, it truly does
To put the size of this perspective, I know of least one pilot who has been down in the crater in a jet fighter doing 400Kts.
