Hey Hoggers, looking for a Macro lens for my 7100. I was trying to decide between Tonkia 100mm, Tamron 90mm or Nikon 105. researched all three and have narrowed down to the Tonkia or the Tamrom then I discovered a Sigma 70mm Macro and have read glowing reviews about it. Anyone have experience with the 70? It is more of the focal length I want. Thanks

I believe the 70 is dis-continued and only available used on ebay. Tamron does make a 60mm f2 FWIW ....

What subjects will you be shooting ?. Kinda short focal length for anything but static subjects...Minimum focus distance is just over 10 inches (that is from the sensor to the subject, not the front of the lens to the subject) It's not an internal focus lens so it extends out to 5.7 inches at life size. Add in the depth of the camera (about 3 inches) & you are pretty much right on top of the subject. Not good for insects...I own 8 different macro lenses from 55 to 180 mm in both MF & AF iterations. I also shoot my macro with a D7100 and my go-to macro lens is a MF 105mm F2.8

It may be "NEW" but that won't help you should you need repair as its been discontinued for quite some time and is no longer supported by Sigma. Meaning you will not be able to get repairs should you ever need them.

I'd stay away from the 70mm, a little to short IMO. I like a longer working distance (I use a Nikon 200mmm), so off of your list I'd favor the 100mm+ and forget the 70mm. BTW - all of the lenses you listed are fine. Macro lenses tend to all be pretty good, so no worries there.

My favorite is the Nikkor 60/2.8 - I do mostly close-in work. If I was a bug shooter, I would probably use the 105 or 180 depending on how skittish your subjects are.

Thanks for the quick answers guys. As for the 70 being kinda shot my plan is to use for stationary objects not really close up. Flowers, portraits, people, objects. Looks like I'll give the 70 or Tonkia 100 a shot. Just can't get over the glowing reviews I have read about the 70.

I bought the Tokina 100mm for my D7200. I have not used it much yet as the weather won't let me get outside much and the flowers and bugs are not numerous yet. From what little I have used it, though, I really think it is going to be an awesome purchase. It is very highly rated, especially for the price.

Royce-I've got the Sigma 105mm, f/2.8, and absolutely love it. The AF is a little slow, but then, I'm not shooting action with it. On my Canon gear, it produces very sharp images.

I have the Tamron SP90f2.8 for my crop sensor camera and love it. Weather sealed, sharp, fast auto focus. The longer focal length allows for greater distance from subject, so better for bug shots. Also good portrait focal length.

Nice thing about 70mm, that is a great portrait focal length as well. Sigma lenses are my only choice if off brand lenses.

We have (or have had) both the Tamron 90mm and the Tokina 100mm. Both are excellent lenses but to my tired eyes the Tokina seemed to be a bit sharper and the focus was a little less noisy. Take care & ...

I also have the Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Model F017. The reviews from a variety of sources were outstanding. Also great for portraits. Cost was around $675. I am very happy with it.
