Lightroom exporting to jpg - file size

I am wondering how to determine the file size in Lightroom Classic for JPGs. The "export as" command doesn't give me a size option for jpg files and the files it generate are huge, like 20 MB. So I have to open again in Photoshop to resave at lower file size every time.

Are you concerned about the impact on storage space or just the file size.

Hi, you can set the size in the export box under the file settings section where you can select the quality and the file size limit and then in the image sizing below that you can set width and height. You need to scroll down in the export box to see all your options.

No, I am concerned about file size for JPGs, I have plenty of storage. My JPGs are about 20 MB, where I'd like to keep the file size to single digits for sending batches of files in jpg

There are two different ways to control file size in the Export dialog. Check the box "Limit File Size To" and pick a number. I use 5000 for things I'm going to email.

Yes, a 20MB JPG is rather large. I don't use Lr but Ps CS6. I work with 16-bit 300ppi PSD or TIFF files usually and when I convert for output to JPGs they are usually under 12MB, but with a reduction to 150ppi. In fact my email service limits me to 20MB of files at a time.

Aside from the suggestions offered as far as specifying the file size limit in Lr's export dialog, there are two other things you can do - resize the image to a smaller dimension (in pixels) and you can also adjust the quality. A 20 mb jpeg sounds like you are exporting full size jpegs at 100% (or near 100%) quality. Specifying just a file size limit will only adjust the quality, but will keep your original dimensions intact.

You can, and probably should create a preset for exporting, that will customize the image size, quality and size in mb.

You can save an image at 12 ppi or 600 ppi (or dpi, as Adobe likes to call it), and the file size and how it displays will be identical. The ppi/dpi number in the metadata is completely meaningless, aside from giving you an image size if you were to print it at that resolution.

Here is one image saved with different parameters -

The first is the full resolution image 9683x7346 px, or 71.1mp, saved with a quality setting of 60% and 300ppi, for a file size of 15.6 mb
Next is the same image saved with a quality of 100%, file size limit of 20 mb, 300ppi. The file is slightly smaller at 15.5 mb
The next is the same image as #1, saved at 12 ppi - the file size is exactly the same as #1 - 15.6 mb.

The next is the same as #1, downsampled to 2048 px on the longest side, quality 60% - file size is 2.4 mp
And the last is the same as #1, downsampled to 3600 px on longest side, quality 60% - file size 3.2 mp

For my purposes, the last two images load faster and look fine, even when zoomed in here in the UHH file viewer. There is really no need for a bigger file.

And as you can see with the 2nd and 3rd image. the ppi the image is saved at makes no difference whatsoever.

Out of curiosity when I use LR my RAW files are about 20 mb when I export as a jpeg my files are only about 5 to 6 mb. How are yours 20mb. I have LR set to file settings quality 100, no limit on file size, Image sizing the only thing highlighted is resolution 300

Yes, I've noticed petty much the same thing with Ps CS6. A 20mb jpg probably started as a 100 mb tiff at least!

I just checked and the exported files are about 5 MB. Don't know why the files open at 20 MB as I can't repeat the export with such a large file size.

Using the following files in JPG or Tif or Nikon NEF files and the file sizes after post processing are all over the scale.

Is it better to save the file as a JPG after your processing or as a TIF file format?

Here I used the JPG files through HDR processing using Corel Paintshop Pro 2018 about 11mb each in size produced a file of JPG 5mb file size.

Using the same JPG files again saved the file as a TIG file and "Holy Disk Space Batman" the TIF file is 150MB insize!!!

I have been using Corel Paintshop since the is was JASC twenty years ago so changing software is not an option.

Suggestions on best procedures appreciated.

Hi, it is very easy in LR to determine an approximate MB size. Use the Image Sizing box and Resize to Fit. I have included two examples here. One example is what I often use for web and the other example is what someone might use, depending on the size of file needed for printing, for a print file. The Resize to Fit offers several options and you should play with each one to determine what they do. Be careful with downsizing the quality setting as it will degrade the jpeg image, stay at around 85 in general to get a better image.
